Ramses Barden - 6'-6", 227 lbs, 4.58 40-time, projected 2-3 rd pick

Positives: Dominated FCS competition because of his height and strong overall build. His long stride gives him deceptive downfield speed. Takes advantage of soft coverage with receiver screens and short patterns, and has better foot quickness than expected for his size. Makes quick moves at the line to get off a jam. Able to snatch the ball with his hands, secure it and quickly turn to get additional yardage. A strong red-zone and jump-ball target due to his height, length, and size.

Negatives: Lacks the straight-line speed to get separation from top corners, and must be more consistent using his length to create last-second separation as the ball arrives. Inconsistent hands on jump balls, where he always has an advantage. Played most of his games against a lower level of competition. Lacks the open-field quickness to elude NFL cornerbacks on the edge.

In our view: Scouts who hadn't seen Barden play until his Mustangs took on annual Big Ten contender Wisconsin in Madison late in 2008 were instantly intrigued. His impressive production at the FCS level (122 catches for 2,724 yards and 36 tds the past two seasons) might not translate to immediate NFL success. But he proved himself more than just a tall jump-ball threat against the Badgers, and NFL teams took notice.

Is this guy another RW? Is he going to be there in the third? Should we use a second on a player either not on the LOS or LB?

Personally, I think we have enough tall, long striders. I want some quickness and speed, like Mike Thomas or Mike Wallace.

I agree with you.

Let's get a WR with a different skill set to create mis-matches when we can.

I'd love to get M Thomas in the 3rd or 4th.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I think it is a preference that Vela has noted before. We simply do not profile the position with receivers under 6 foot. Quickness doesn't look like something we value very much if we are investing a lot of energy into types like Barden and USC's Patrick Turner.

I suppose it is just a fetish.

I dont want a 4.6 40 receiver that dominated average small college CB's and has trouble getting separation from good College CB's. What is wrong with that picture?

Ill give the Cowboys the benefit of the doubt in who ever they pick.

They have been doing a heck of a job lately.

Last year about 40% of our fan base HATED our draft.

I bet you can't find 1 person who disagrees with it now.

Personally I would like someone faster. But not at the expense of a better football player.

Not saying this guy is a bust or anything of the sort, but enough with these types of WRs already. Will anyone on this team in not named Jason Witten be able to get separation in 2009? I really fear that Romo won't be handle all of these pass catchers that he'll have to trust to go get the ball. He seems to be more comfortable throwing to guys that cleanly open or at least he percieves to be that way.

I agree as well. Mike Thomas has the look of someone who will be effective in the NFL for years.

I'll admit I know nothing about Cal-Poly. Do they ever play any decent competition? Is this kid going to be ready to provide some snaps to this team out of the gates or is this a receiver that you're going to have to groom, and build, for 3 or 4 years, like Austin, because he played at such a small school with smaller competition?

I'd think if we draft a receiver in the 2nd or 3rd round this year it's going to have to be because you believe he's going to get on the field, consistently, this season to provide you with some receptions, not so that you can have him sit around behind all the other guys, like Austin and Stanback, their first year or two in the league learning the position.

Bingo was his name-o.

Is Mike Thomas as quick as he is fast? If so, he's going to be my pet cat in this draft. I'm dying to get a quick WR.

I don't have a problem if they think this guy is going to be good down the road. We can't draft every player for next year.

But I agree with you. We need another TG on this team. Perhaps they think Austin can be that guy. But he still doesn't have the quicks that I believe you're talking about. And I couldn't agree more. We just don't draft those guys anymore. You need a Kelvin Martin on your team to compliment those premier guys.

Ramses Barden
WR, Cal Poly

RAMSES BARDEN MEASURABLES
Height: 6-6 Weight: 227
40-yard dash: 4.51 10-yard dash: 1.62
20-yard shuttle: 4.55 60-yard shuttle: 11.80
Broad jump: 10-2 225-lb. bench: 17
3-cone drill: 7.10 Vertical jump: 33
Wonderlic: 20-yard dash: 2.66

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is a huge receiver with great height and long arms. Can twist his body to catch off-target passes with remarkable ease and can get up high to make the catch over cornerback in jump-ball situations. Has no fear catching passes in traffic, takes hard hit and holds on to the ball. Comes down the line aggressively and will blow up the linebacker on a crack-back block. Does well blocking down the field, stays after blocks and eliminates the defender to spring the ball carrier for a big play. Gets started upfield quickly after the catch and can make quick cuts to avoid tacklers.

Weaknesses: Is thin, considering his height. Lacks the explosiveness off the ball to get behind the cornerback immediately. Does not show burst out of cuts to get separation and lacks the top-end playing speed to stretch the field and get separation deep. Despite his size, is not a big-play runner after the catch. Gets tripped up by low grab tackles and does not show the strength to break tackles and gain yards after contact.

Bottom line: Barden is a huge small-school receiver who was dominant at Cal Poly, but isn't regarded as a wideout who can make big plays. His great size, hands and excellent ball skills should give him a chance in the NFL as a backup who specializes in the red zone or on special teams.

I feel really, really sorry for this pea-sized DB covering Barden.
