Agreed. If we trade back, get Moehrig and Alim at 44. If we don't trade back, get Farley, Alim, and Grant with the first 3 picks. Either scenario gives us a much better defence. I think our next FA move should be LB in case we can't get a trade back.
I like that scenario

Grant may not even make it to 44 let alone 3rd

I see where youre going though. I like it

Thankies! Oh, and if we get a good trade back to add an extra 2nd, I'd LOVE it if we can also get Baron Browning with the second of 2 2nd round picks. Give him a look. I've featured him in my last 2 mock drafts. He's a run stopper LB and is also excellent in coverage.

Same here, especially if we can also get Shelvin as well in round 3 or 4. We'd have an excellent dline if we do that. I really like this signing.

This will be the year when DT is a clear and glaring need (even with these signings) for upgrades and we ignore the position entirely in the draft, claiming we couldn't pass on the value at other positions. Like we did with RB the year running backs were considered a draft strength. Like we did with S the year safeties were considered a draft strength. I guess at least we have the fact that it's not considered to be a strong DT draft at the very top.

Plus, if we don't better address corner and address free safety in free agency, those are going to be our biggest areas of need ... and at least this is a strong corner class.

You’re not getting Grant in the 3rd

I can see that. He's a beast after all. So, Moehrig is the one I'd most prefer in that situation anyway. I may even consider reaching for him at 10 if needed and if Farley and Surtain are off the board. We have a huge need at S, and there are tons of good CBs in this draft. So, from that standpoint and if nobody calls offering a trade for the 10th spot, I'd strongly consider making Moehrig my 10th pick. I know that's not likely to be popular, but, like I said, there are excellent CB prospects throughout the draft. Not on the level of Farley or Surtain, but they're excellent prospects nonetheless. If no trade back, I may consider Moehrig, Alim, Browning/Ambry Thomas and follow that up with Adebo from Stanford.

Better is a Trade down scenario to grab Moehrig + extra picks.

Agreed. This is why I think it makes more sense to take Moehrig in round 1. I know he's a reach at 10, but, if we can't trade back (where we'd take him in my scenario anyway), I'm taking him at 10 just with how big a need S is and the fact that there's not much else for top S in the draft (though, Holland from Oregon MIGHT be my 3rd round pick if he falls that far and if we go CB early). Alim or Tufele make the most sense in round 2. Those picks propel our defence from worst to top 10 in my mind.

I wish people had a little more nuance in their takes. Name a DT we have that graded better against the run than him. Is he Dalvin Tomlinson? No. Is he an upgrade at a position we desperately need help in? Absolutely.

I understand the need to upgrade, but we had a historically bad defense last year. It needs a major infusion of talent along with upgrading depth. There were opportunities to get that infusion in free agency, but we sat that out and opted just for upgrades.

Maybe that will work, but our track history with this kind of FA plan isn't very good. So I can't give the front office the benefit of the doubt.

I agree, and I'd prefer to trade down. In the vast majority of scenarios that I like to do, I do get good offers and, with it being the 10th pick and with who will likely be sitting there, we SHOULD be able to trade down. I'm just saying, in the event we can't trade back because nobody offers sufficient compensation for our 10th, then Moehrig is my pick at 10 anyway.

Did I say that? Or is what I said accurate?

Part of the exact reason I’m overly pessimistic this season is for being dumb enough to buy a little of the hype last season for the second time in 4 years only to get the same results. Not happening again.
I never said you said IT. I asked you a question didn't say you made the statement.....

I get where you’re coming from. I think we should still get a DT in the draft. Someone like Jay Tufele at #44 who is good at stopping the run but can also be effective rushing the QB.

I think the next signings we should make are Alejandro Villanueva (Former OT of the Steelers), KJ Wright (LB Seahawks), Keanu Neal, Carlos Dunlap, and BJ Goodson. I'm not saying we'll get all or even any of them, but let me explain why I say this. Villanueva would really help our oline. I know we signed a T yesterday, but Villanueva on a 1 year deal would really help us with TSmith's issues. Especially if Collins is still injured. Wright is simply due to the familiarity that Quinn has with him and the help we need at LB. Though, Wright is not my favourite choice. Neal is also for Quinn's familiarity, and we can use him at S. Carlos Dunlap would be a potential 1 year signing that wouldn't cost us much, but would give us a good pass rusher. Finally, BJ Goodson was a LB for the Browns. He's a decent LB. Not a huge name. He's the type of signing that the FO would bring in, but he's also a solid player. He's good at run stopping. These signings would really help us with our draft. It would leave us draft needs at CB, DT, and rookie S (may mean we can bring in a guy like Holland in round 3 instead if we go Farley at 10). However, as stated, it might relieve us of a bit of pressure at S to where we can get a S that needs developing like Holland or Paris Ford in round 3.
