Dawkins, 6-2, 292 pounds, was a seventh-round pick of the Vikings last April and had been on the practice squad for the season. He had five tackles and a half sack in the preseason. He started 41 of 57 games at Florida State.

The Cowboys also filled their two practice-squad openings by signing guard Phillipkeith Manley and defensive linemen Hall Davis. Manley, 6-5, 309 pounds, spent parts of the past two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Davis was a fifth round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2010 and has bounced around with four other teams.

Liked him coming out of FSU in the draft. Thought we could get him in the later rounds.

I wonder what the record is for most players on a roster in a season is?

Who cares? It does show they are not standing pat with the bottom five of the roster, especially with the defensive line.

The only drawback is if after the season they get comfortable with the extra bodies and do not look to the draft for more help there.

Man, if there is such a thing as second chance ferry for linemen, it has to be Marinelli.

I wish they would do this with other positions as well (offensive line, etc.). Maybe they just consider Marinelli's scheme simple enough to learn on the fly?

It has to at least be a cowboys record.

I would wager that 1989 was worse.

And, by proxy, 1987 was worse because they fielded two teams that year (replacement players and regular players).

Could be that or Marinelli is simply a better coach. The OL would not work as well mainly because not everyone is cut out for a zone blocking scheme. Practically any player who is comfortable pinning their ears back and told to go sic the QB can fit.

There is a difference here and what Johnson was doing in 1989. This is trying to find a better combination for a depleted unit, that was simply blowing up the entire team.

Marinelli seems to be very particular in what he's looking for and I love it

True this is not churning the bottom these guys are signing on a Monday and playing the following sunday. As thin as we are the Cowboys do not have a choice. I commend the work by Rod Marinelli and Leon Lett getting this guys ready to play so quickly.

Hey guys!

Here's that investment in the trenches we've been waiting for!

:D

That is what is a little concerning.

By the time April rolls around, our DL could look like this if everything stays the same:

Ware, Hatcher (if signed), Crawford, Spencer (if signed) starting; Hayden, Nevis, Dawkins, Brown, Wilber, Rayford, Wynn, Jones and Bass as reserves.

Then Kiffin could say the meeting room is full again and we ignore the need for upgrading.

I can't believe anyone would be dumb enough to try to sell anyone on that.

And for the record, I don't think either Spencer or Hatcher are back next year.

I don't think Kiffin and Marinelli are looking at how many bodies are on the DL and I do think as time goes on they will look to add more talent to the DL. Right now they are looking at what it out there right now does not mean they are content, if they were they would not be releasing guys
