Cowboys sign Will McClay to extension

My wish the past few years has been the desire to bring someone in who can help identify defensive talent. We do great on offense, not so much on our defensive picks. Maybe these young defensive backs will pan out so time will tell there, but we've spent some resources on defense and just can't seem to get a solid unit out there without the offense protecting them with ball control.
Jury is out on this batch of DBs and I don't hold Jaylon Smith or Ganjory against McClay, that had Booger's fingerprints all over it.

It's those times that I'm referring to. That and the fact that Will McClay does the GM work while Jerry Jones egotistically clutches onto the GM title.

Personally, I'd like that part. You make the decision but hardly ever get the blame when one turns out to be wrong. Everyone blames Jerry the GM.

Sure, you also don't publicly get the credit, but it's easy to see that teams know who's really responsible for our player acquisitions and direction in that regard.

I like him.

I just wish I knew if he was as anti free agency and Trades as Stephen Jones has been.

If he is one of the guys pushing that agenda then I wish we would've let him go.

Other then that I like the job he's done in the draft overall.

I don't think it's that they are anti free agency as much as it is they are anti salary cap problems and anti trading away draft picks. The Cowboys may be a little over cautious, but that's at least a little understandable considering salary cap problems dogged the Cowboys for most of 2 decades, and considering the draft has been good to them in recent years. Besides, I don't think other teams make trades nearly as often as Cowboy fans think they do. It's not a free wheeling thing that only the Cowboys don't participate in.

I watched the Commanders get anyone and everyone they wanted for years under much worst circumstances then we had.

I'm not asking for us to be like that.

But I think reasonable free agent signings and trades that aren't pure dumpster dives need to be made and we have had the cap space to make those moves but they won't do it in fear of getting a Brandon Carr.

And that - and frequent raises - is exactly why McClay is still here.

If the money is the same, I wouldn't care much about the letters "G" and "M" either. But that doesn't make it any less comical that Jerry Jones stubbornly holds onto them.

I don't disagree that they seem to have become a little to adverse to trades and free agency, but it is a delicate game to find the kind of players that will be notable additions without it costing too much too get them. Frankly the Cowboys are still kind of going through a learning curve on how to balance all this after way too many years of having no discipline with trades and free agents.

I feel McClay gets a lot of praise just because his last name isn’t Jones....his title says he’s in charge of pro personnel as well and to be perfectly honest, he’s doing a fairly terrible job at that. I look up and down the roster and see a sheer lack of talent. Obviously that doesn’t go all on McClay, but I don’t know if fans should be cheering that anyone in the front office is back after the off season the team had last year.
It's all relative.

Just look at who is around him making draft/personnel decisions on this team.

He's the best of the bunch. By far.

My concerns about W-Mc are...

1) If he’s comfortable working for the Joneses, then he must be comfortable with mediocrity.

2) If he’s such a shrewd player-personnel guy, why are we so shallow at so many positions?

3) If W-Mc is truly calling the PP shots, as many here contend, then he’s as much a part of any problems as the Joneses — if not more.

If we're lucky, McClay outlasts Jerry and Garrett and runs the show with Stephen as owner with a new coaching staff

yikes, don't do that.
give the guy 100% of the drafting blame and 100% of the praise.
his primary job is to get everyone on the same page.
he is really the GM.

Ok well best of the bunch that can’t consistently put a winning team on the field isn’t good enough for me.

And yes, I’m aware there’s nothing that can or will be done about it. I’m just saying it’s kind of weird to me that people are excited for a guy that plugged important holes on a 13-3 team with the likes of Nolan Carol and Stephen Paea.

Or it seems McClay gets credit for the smart moves and the Jones’ get blamed for the bad ones? I’m not sure how it all works honestly...

It's weird.

He's the GM but I feel like he doesn't get to set the rules for player acquisition.

He is told by Stephen, imo, that they will try to acquire mostly through the draft and dumpster dive everywhere else.

He also doesn't get involved in who gets to coach this team. He just finds out what the coach wants and goes and gets it.

Jerry doesn't do much of anything but protect Garrett in the media.

I'm just sick of it all and i'm sick of the teeter totter seasons we have.

Jason Garretts brand of football will just provide nothing but roller coasters. He had a franchise QB in Romo and still produced nothing but Roller coasters.

I blame Garrett for the results but I blame JErry Jones for keeping this guy for this long. They have wasted a decade with this guy.

They paid Demarcus Ware tons of money to eventually just go win his Superbowl on another team.

Even when they get their coach a great player the coach doesn't use them properly.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for improvement.

But what are the chances that if McClay walks, the Jones' find an upgrade as a replacement?

I have no faith in that possibility whatsoever.

INDIANAPOLIS -- As a number of teams flirted with the idea of making Will McClay their general manager, including the Houston Texans this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys made sure to show their appreciation to their vice president of player personnel.

According to sources, the Cowboys signed McClay to a two-year extension after he declined the opportunity to interview with Houston.

They'd better hang on to this guy as long as he's the best alternative to the judgment of Jerry Jones. If they allow him to get away, they deserve everything that comes with it.. Truth -- here's hoping they do whatever's in their power to keep him in house, because the alternative would most likely be alarming. For one, I'm greatly relieved to see he'll stay and congratulate the FO for making it possible. Good fortune for us and just keep on making it happen..

i'm hoping it means jerry will soon pass the torch to Stephen, and Stephen will make will mcclay the gm. those two seem to work very well together.
