The former No. 37 overall pick struggled to stay healthy, however, and never contributed to the Jets in a serious way because of it. He tore his ACL twice in three seasons with the Jets, once as a rookie in 2015 and then again in 2017. They waived him before the 2018 season began, and he chose not to sign with a new team likely for the sake of focusing on his rehab. He caught only 10 passes for 135 yards and a score in his time in New York.

Love this move. This is a great under the radar move. If this guy comes back to full strength it is an absolute steal cause it means two things.
1. We get a guy who can really stretch the field and get over the top of the defense.
2. If he can get back to full strength it would mean he has the motivation factor. Means it means something to him. Nice job McClay.

Homerun threat. Cheaper, younger version of Deonte Thompson.

26 years old, ran a 4.4 40. Love this kind of low risk, high reward type of gamble.

From his Wiki page:
Smith also spent three spring seasons sprinting and jumping with the Buckeyes track & field team. He finished in a tie for second at the 2014 Big Ten outdoor championships in the high jump by clearing a personal, collegiate-best 7-0.25 (2.18 metres) in his first competition of the season, and qualified him for NCAA regional competition

Props Front Office.

Who knows? Worth kicking the tires. Knees are a funny thing...might blow out again and be down OR he could rehab, recover and be a real contributor. Roll the dice and see what happens.

Based on the success of gambling on Gregory and Smith, let's not rule this out as a possible good move. I'm sure Jerry's orthopedic surgeon gave him a clean bill of health. I like the move, low risk with the potential for high reward.

This is why Jerry built a sports medicine center.

This guy fits the bill for a medical comp pick churn. Out of the league injured last year means a zero baseline for what we've picked up against our comp picks. If he leaves recovered and a viable NFL player, we get a comp pick for him.

If he works out for us, all the better.

I loved DEVIN SMITH predraft. This is a very good signing if he has recovered. Maybe our payback on surrendering Jimmy Smith

sign everyone you want, let the coords dump whoever, and this year, trim that roster. no more holding on to players who wont see the field.

Just watched his highlights and came away very impressed. He can damn sure get separation.

The qb deserved a lot of credit too...he was hitting him in stride perfectly.

Are the people saying he can stretch the field just completely ignoring the effect two torn ACLs will have on his explosion? He's not gonna be the same player.

Yep.

It's not like you ever expect to find a stud on a futures deal, but I doubt that Smith has much left.

How nice if we end up on the good end of a Jimmy Smith situation. This would be a real good time for the football Gods to pay us back for that.
