I see what you're saying but the analogy is bad. The WR can't move until the ball is snapped, but he can sure as heck run by the receivers before the ball is passed. He is allowed to get free and clear, not make sure one of the safteys is there to help sombody else out who is stationed at the goal line the entire game to prevent scoring.

The soccer team that would have a guy just standing next to the goalie waiting to cherry-pick the entire game would essentially be playing the rest of the field with one less player than the other team. That would seem like a disadvantage to me. Sort of like a hockey team playing with a player in the penalty box. Besides, the other team could put a defender on that player if they wanted to.
whoops. beat me to it. :)

The analogy isn't a bad one. It's not the exactly the same thing because its not exactly the same sport.

You really think the team with the cherry picker is disadvantaged? Not so much. It would take one touch to play the ball over the last defender to give the cherry picking team countless one on one match ups with the goalie, and any striker or forward that is worth a damn will win that match up 95% of the time. This can actually be done, but only if the player is still on his side of the field at the time the ball is played. If the opposing team decided to put a defender on him, then it's likely not going to be offsides because the defender would obviously want to be between the offensive player and the goal, and this is often what is the actual case in soccer.

It's a good rule. We're talking about a pretty old sport here. They've had ample time to figure out what rules work, and which ones don't. Unfortunately, they've chosen to ignore some of them....hence the constant diving in today's soccer games.

Well we just disagree, Tomson75. No problem there.

I certainly do not know a lot about soccer, but I am curious.

Before the ball is snapped in football, the wide receivers must always line up with their team at or near the line of scrimmage. The opposing team's defense is between them and the endzone. If the wide receivers get behind the safeties, they will have done so by running patterns, utilizing their speed, etc.

Now, please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't strikers or forwards, who are the team member who receive the ball to score like football wide receivers, always position themselves in the area of the field closest to the opponent's goal? What I guess I'm asking is, do they have to work through the other team's players before they can put themselves in position to score? Or are they already positioned at or near where they are supposed to be already--which is behind the other team's 'defense'--near the goal they're trying to net the ball?

I'm not going to take the time to try and explain all of this. It would take entirely too much effort for something that a no longer even care for that much.

I'll just leave it by saying that I played for the sport 16 years off and on, and that the offsides rule is an important one. I can see why people that don't particularly care for the sport think its dumb, but as is often the case when people are uneducated about something, they are probably wrong to think that way.

LeonDixson stated what I was asking.

I already admitted my ignorance of the sport and hoped that someone who was knowledgeable about the sport would explain the positioning of the strikers or forwards in relation to the field. I didn't ask a question about soccer's offsides rule. I was wrong for asking. My apologies.

I agree, it's pretty ridiculous. And agree on the Emmitt point. But that junk alone wouldn't keep my from liking a sport. If I didn't like it already though like you it would make me hate it even more.
I have another reason for hating it. In 5th grade in Albuquerque, New Mexico I was the All Star Goalie. No one ever scored a goal on me the entire season.

No one ever scored because we had a kid named Roy who was from Bolivia and was playing soccer as soon as he could walk. Getting the ball past him was impossible. I had entire games where I could have taken a nap back there and no one would have scored. I remember games where the ball was on our side of the field for just a few seconds at most. I spent the entire season feeling useless and bored and then I got an award for it.

I didn't like the sport back then and only played it because we didn't have enough without me. It galls to me have won an award for what I did.

Congrats! You sound like an incredible soccer player and goalie!

I never played soccer because if I kicked a soccer ball when I was a kid my foot would go numb and if i tried to lift my foot past horizontal to the ground it would start to shake. Doesn't make any sense.

I like most sports including soccer. I can't play soccer, and I don't watch soccer but when it comes to the big stage where country vs country comes into play I just can't help but watch it because of the pride of the team's country.

Favorite sport to play and watch:

Football, Basketball, tennis (only play)

Favorite sport to watch:

Horse racing, greyhound racing (live), hockey, soccer (gave info on top of post), and maybe a few more that I left out

Only sport I can't bare either watching nor playing would be baseball. NASCAR I can't comment on since I never been to it live and never took longer than 20 minutes to watch it on tv.

I think I actually faced 3 goals all season. Most of them kicked from around midfield before Roy could get to the ball.

It's like the event organizers didn't even watch their own sport.

I was by far the least deserving of an award in the entire city.

It should be against the rules to even discuss that god awful sport! It's just a bigger version of kick-ball that we played in 1st or 2nd grade!

No need for apologies, it's just that its incredibly difficult to explain positioning of soccer positions with any degree of haste. There are general guidelines, but there are far too many aspects that can change those guidelines. There are also several different formations that are used in soccer....akin to the differences in the 4-3 and the 3-4 defenses in football. Sometimes teams play with 1 striker, sometimes 3. Each formation changes the responsibilities of each particular forward.

The fact that a forward players responsibilities overlap with other forward players is compounded by the fact that they also overlap with the responsibilities of midfielders. Lots of overlapping. ;)

A layperson's view of the sport is very different from a player's view, that's for sure.

I honestly think much of the world hates/resents us because we haven't embraced their "beautiful game." They practically had a coronary when we hosted the World Cup, as if some sort of blasphemy was being committed. We don't (relentlessly) push baseball on other countries or wonder why they don't "get it." The same cannot be said of the soccer fanatics.

As far as I am concerned...post of the day...for sheer truth.
