Cowboys' Stephen Jones: Chris Johnson on team's 'short list'

Free-agent running back Chris Johnson recently said he'd love to join the Cowboys. Though the Cowboys aren't in any rush to add another running back, Johnson isn't too far off the team's radar.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked about Johnson in a conference call with season-ticket holders. Via the team's website, Jones said the team has at least some interest in Johnson.

“We haven’t visited with Chris, and we can’t talk about him because he’s a free agent. But right now we’re looking at the guys that we have on our roster,” Jones said. “He is somebody that is on a short list of ours that we think could ultimately come in and do some good things for us if we asked him to. But I wouldn’t say it’s a priority right now.”

After running for 2,006 yards in 2009, Johnson has been unable to live up to expectations since. With the Jets a year ago, Johnson only totald 663 yards and one touchdown while notching just one start.

The Cowboys added Darren McFadden this offseason after DeMarco Murray left for Philadelphia. Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams are the other backs on the roster.

I'd honestly be shocked. It seems to go against the recent trends around here.

As he should be. Why wouldn't you get a proven back in this league? CJ hasn't been the 2,000 yard back that he was, but he's more proven than anything we have now. AD would be nice, but we could get CJ here and see what he does without giving up picks or players.

I'll go for that but cj2k is a shell of his 2000 yard self. I had him on FF and watched him not win a job over Chris Ivory.

Still, I think he is a better choice than McFlatten.

I think Johnson is here before training camp starts. AP was a pipe dream, Johnson is much more likely.

I feel like if Johnson had never said anything, we would never have heard Stephen mention it as a possibility. I.E.- its a response to what he said and not concrete interest.

I made a post that was merged to another post... but yea... there isn't a comparison between Johnson and MCFadden, Johnson is actually far closer to non-2012 AD than he is to McFadden

No, he's not the same guy, But he still managed to average 4.3 YPC for a Jet team that did not have an offensive line nearly as talented as the Cowboys nor was there any passing game for the Jets to keep the pressure off the running game.

He.s being polite to him like jerry was to manziel on that whole wanted to draft him hoax

I only see him coming if we (hopefully not) an injury to the guys before or in camp...
