Cowboys' Stephen Jones: Chris Johnson on team's 'short list'

Free-agent running back Chris Johnson recently said he'd love to join the Cowboys. Though the Cowboys aren't in any rush to add another running back, Johnson isn't too far off the team's radar.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked about Johnson in a conference call with season-ticket holders. Via the team's website, Jones said the team has at least some interest in Johnson.

“We haven’t visited with Chris, and we can’t talk about him because he’s a free agent. But right now we’re looking at the guys that we have on our roster,” Jones said. “He is somebody that is on a short list of ours that we think could ultimately come in and do some good things for us if we asked him to. But I wouldn’t say it’s a priority right now.”

After running for 2,006 yards in 2009, Johnson has been unable to live up to expectations since. With the Jets a year ago, Johnson only totald 663 yards and one touchdown while notching just one start.

The Cowboys added Darren McFadden this offseason after DeMarco Murray left for Philadelphia. Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams are the other backs on the roster.

He did say "come holler at me"!

i breezed over thqt article and wondered about that too, didnt want to seemstupid and ask.ha

I accepted looking stupid a long time ago, that's the great thing about getting older......the less ****s I give;)

Thats gotta be a typo, if you cant talk to a player when he's a free agent, when can you?

As he should be. Why wouldn't you get a proven back in this league? CJ hasn't been the 2,000 yard back that he was, but he's more proven than anything we have now. AD would be nice, but we could get CJ here and see what he does without giving up picks or players.

Sort of like what I expect from DeMarco after running his nuts off last year.

A big fall off year coming for him I think.

Which brings us back to Johnson.

It's hard to know what was going on in NY with the jets with Rex fussing and feuding with the front office.

He clearly had lost the coaches and players and it was a mess.

The way I look at his low numbers from '14..

He's got less wear and tear now.

I wouldn't sign him as a lead back..

But I think he has more than Dunbar who I think is small and fragile and not good b/w the tackles unless he doesn' get hit.

Strictly a speed runner who will never get the tough yardage or break any tackles.

I would strongly prefer Johnson in that role.

My concern about Chris Johnson is that he used to be a star. A guy like Dunbar is still humble and happy to contribute any way he can. Chris "holler at me" Johnson has an ego that needs to be managed.

Not sure he is working hard to improve himself at this point.

I'll go for that but cj2k is a shell of his 2000 yard self. I had him on FF and watched him not win a job over Chris Ivory.

Still, I think he is a better choice than McFlatten.

I'm kind of shocked someone is talking about getting a veteran running back, that thought never came to me.

in defense of Johnson, he really wasn't in an offense that gave him a lot of help since that 2,000 yd. season. The Titans and Jets both had horrible QB play, meaning it was easier to put 8 in the box and stop Johnson. With Dallas, we have a great OL, Dez, Witten, Beasley, and of course Romo. If Johnson is still a HR hitter, he could hit lots of HRs with the holes our OL makes and with the respect the D must pay to our passing game.

I am ok with the 4 guys we have now, but I do like that Jones is looking at quality FAs.

I see no reason not to bring him to camp. Give him a similar contract to McFadden. Which ever doesn't make the team only costs us $250K to cut.

Agree, I think he would beat out Dunbar and give you more production with less injuries.

Haha, there is absolute NO reason to not bring him in on a cheap deal. If he wants more than that, then so be it. But I'd take Johnson over McFadden any damn day.

Dunbar over Johnson? Come on. I'd like to hear the argument of why someone would choose McFadden over Johnson.

There is absolutely no reason other than cost, the two RBs aren't even remotely comparable. Heck, Johnson practically had as many yards in 2013 as AD (15 fewer total yards), and had more in every year before 2011 yet people are willing to trade a first for AD but not willing to sign CJ2K off the streets... I don't get it at all.

Yeah, everyone should take the time to compare the careers of McFadden and Johnson and then revisit this idea. I sure hope the Cowboys do.

This is all I need to know about this guy who plays for one person and that is himself. Throughout his career this guy is well known as a "me" player. Keep him off this team besides he doesn't fit into the over 30 equation the three anti AD naysayers pointed out.

Interest between Johnson and the Cowboys doesn't appear to be mutual. Going on 30, Johnson hasn't drawn a lick of interest since the Jets declined his option earlier this offseason.

Stephen Jones said he's on the short list of RBs they'd bring in if needed, there IS interest. We just seem to think McFadden is the second coming.

And you're talking about Chris Johnson only playing for himself? Adrian Peterson is making more than ANY other RB in the league, and he's still taking a fit. Does your fanboyism really blind you that much?
