There is really no way to predict what hatch will be over the next 2-3 years
Is he a one year wonder who played great in a contract year and is aging or will he be a consistent performer in the new scheme?

For a team as cash strapped as we are, we cannot afford a big mistake like this so I would stay away unless we are a reasonable 2 year deal which seems VERY unlikely

I would gve the same money to a younger guy like Joseph to shore up the 1 tech DT (cheaper) and draft Donald

In my memory, none of the guys who have gotten the big money deals recently have come CLOSE to earning what they were paid.

They paid Free huge money rather than risk going in another direction, that was a disaster.

Austin was NEVER the guy they thought he was when they scrambled to pay him.

Ratliff was in decline BEFORE they unnecessarily gave him a big deal with two years remaining on his current contract.

And Even Ware has gone into steep decline after his recent big contract.

It would make me leery of spending big money on any of the current crop, especially Hatcher, given his age, and clearly what is a 'get paid' stance.

I'd be keeping in mind that he performed best when motivated by the thought of a new deal.

If they pay a bunch to keep Hatcher it's going to be an enormous mistake. I like the guy but come on. His absolute best year came in a contract year and he's already in his thirties. I'm not interested in any long term, huge money contracts, with Hatcher and it's clear that's exactly what he's going to go for.

Completely agree.

And no matter what the old man might think, this team isn't one big money player away.

Especially one who's been here for every bit of the recent mediocrity.

There's a price and a contract length that would make sense for Hatcher. And Marinelli seems to really want him. We should be trying to get a deal done. The only question is how much we're willing to overpay to get him, and whether we can structure it to minimize some of the risk.

No matter what Hatcher says, playing in this system again makes getting most of his money more likely. That should matter to him.

I'd rather just let him walk, he's made some bizarre comments and combined with how he seemingly blew up in a contract year leads me to think this guy will coast after he gets paid. Gambling on last year being the norm instead of an aberration is a giant mistake IMO, especially factoring in his age.

I don't really care about that, he's been a career JAG who's in his early 30s and now you want to pay him big money because he put up numbers for one year in a scheme designed for his position to thrive?

This dude knew exactly what he was doing, been here long enough to know Jerry will open up that wallet if he can just put together a nice contract year.

Giant mistake if we resign him.

Hatcher has been a good player for several years. He's not JAG. Just because we've been debating how good he is during that time. This year, he's got the sack numbers. He's got good leadership qualities, and we're desperate for a 3-tech.
He's going to get a deal with good money for the next three years. If it's structured correctly, and we can swing it, that's ok if it's in Dallas. We just don't want to bet the farm on a third contract for a player who's only got one year in the new system.

You dont care about that? Did you know he was one of the sack leaders for 3-4 DEs in the nfl? And last yr was the leader in the nfl for sacks for a DT? He has basically been unblockable for the past 2 yrs.

Hatcher started his career behind Chris Canty and marcus Spears. Got his first chance in 2011 after Canty left in FA.

Hatcher has 130 tackles 19.5 sacks 2 FF 1 FR and 1 INT in the last 3 yrs.

LOL yeah the guy has been a JAG.

Journeyman from one of the worst defenses in Cowboys history.
So, of course, Jerra would want him back.
He half a good season last year? Well judge him on his career not one abberant year in which if he didn't make tackles, who would?

Yea before this year he had 16 sacks in a 7 year career for a whopping average of about 2 a year.

But line right up and hand him a big contract as he approaches his mid 30s based off one year out of an 8 year career of mostly JAG performance.

I'm sure it'll work out

Hatcher is 31 and a prime candidate to get more than we can afford to match from some cap-healthy team. He's more than likely to be looking for the fattest contract he can get from whomever offers the most. I hope we offer just enough to keep some other team from getting him without overspending. Hatcher deserves to go out in a final blaze of glory and the Cowboys deserve to get younger on their DL at long last. I believe things are very likely to work out for the best for both Hatcher and the C'boys in 2014. Good luck, Hatch.

He has made it very clear he is going to get "what he deserves".

Fine. Bye. Have a nice couple of years left on your career. Elsewhere.

I agree. He's been steadily improving every year. From a 3-4 to a 4-3. I just don't want to pay big money to aging players. There's life after Jason Hatcher.

Hatcher will hit the open market, Cowboys are opening talks with Hatcher, but im sure theyre far apart on a deal. In the end Hatcher feels respected the Cowboys are interested in retaining him and if his price comes down, maybe it gives the Cowboys the edge for a short term deal. The other thought here is they plan on cutting Ware, which would probably make Hatcher a more important piece to retain... Spencer probably cant pass a physical so I see him sitting on the market for a while.

the only thing Dallas should be talking to Hatcher about is when his locker will be cleaned out so that an incoming player can use it. Like the guy..but its time he sucks another team dry because Dallas has little to give.

Let him walk..................I am not giving big money to a guy blowing up in a contract year and is in his 30s.

Same with Ware, $12 million is laughable...................paycut or release should be our only conversation with him right now.

First off none of us know how much we are talking in salary, plus if he wants to stay (which I believe he does) and we want to keep him (which is also obvious) than they will probably find a middle ground. which be the best option for all involved Second we are not going to get much better in FA, Melton maybe, but I believe he can be had on the cheap. He is coming off an injury, Marinelli is here, and he is from Texas, trust me we are near the top of his desired teams he'd like to play for.

Sure, we do not know the dollars. We do have quotes from Hatcher specifically that indicate he will demand what "he deserves".

Hopefully, the Jones' guess on that worth is much less than what he thinks it should be.
