TRADED Cowboys trade for OT Broderick Jones

But what exactly did we buy

We gave
  • A third round pick
  • A sixth round pick
We got
  • A fourth round pick
  • A fourth year project who would have been cut tomorrow if not for fear of the PR from failing on a first round pick
  • Who had spinal fusion less than a year ago and isn’t in game shape because he’s still recovering
  • Is an unrestricted free agent in six months
I’m trying to find a way to make this make sense

If he were simply an underperforming project that the Steelers gave up on, with a couple of years left, that would have been worth it.
These are thing I’m hung up on. But I’ll have to trust them like we did on everyone from mazi and all those 2nd round picks to bland,

Agreed though I don't think Jones is that level bad.

I’m surprised they had to give a third. I know we got stuff back but still a 3rd is the headline.
Yikes lets hope that maybe a different blocking scheme fits him.

T Broderick Jones, Pittsburgh Steelers

Jones’ tenure with the Steelers has hardly gone according to plan. The 14th overall pick in 2023 has played to just a 58.1 overall PFF grade through his first three years, and his 22 sacks surrendered are the fourth-most among tackles in that span.

Jones was already put on notice when Pittsburgh declined his fifth-year option, then selected Max Iheanachor in the first round of April’s draft. Beyond that, Jones has generally struggled in the preseason, giving up three sacks over two games while playing well into the fourth quarter with the Steelers’ backups.

Offensive line depth is always coveted, which could preserve a roster spot for Jones — especially with Iheanachor hardly practicing due to an injury. Yet it also wouldn’t come as a total shock to see Jones traded or cut by Sunday, as a fresh start seems inevitable for both sides in the next year.

Broderick Jones would likely be a better natural fit for the Dallas Cowboys' blocking scheme than he is in Pittsburgh's wide-zone system.

His physical profile and playing style align cleanly with what Dallas demands from its offensive tackles under Brian Schottenheimer.

Why He Fits Dallas Better

  • Physicality & Finishing (Power/Duo Fit): Coming out of Georgia, Jones' trademark trait was his mean streak, grip strength, and explosive initial punch. Dallas runs a heavy amount of Duo, Power-O, and inside-gap concepts that require tackles to create vertical movement and blow defenders off the ball. Jones excels when he can play downhill and bully edge setters, rather than constantly moving laterally.
  • Comfort in Jump Sets & Vertical Sets: At Georgia, Jones operated in a pro-style system where he relied on aggressive, physical sets to stun pass rushers early. Dallas’s pass protection uses frequent jump sets to take the fight to edge rushers at the line of scrimmage, which suits Jones' explosive upper-body strength and long reach.
  • Second-Level Disruption: In gap schemes, tackles are often asked to execute combination blocks before climbing to seal linebackers. Jones’s athletic traits make him dangerous when charging straight forward to clear out linebackers in space, a core requirement for Dallas' interior-driven run game.

Why the Steelers Scheme Has Been a Tougher Transition

  • Wide-Zone Footwork Demands: Arthur Smith’s scheme in Pittsburgh requires tackles to consistently hit bucket steps, stretch laterally, and turn edge defenders. While Jones is athletic, his footwork can get over-extended when constantly asked to reach-block faster defensive ends on the outside edge.
  • Position Swapping: Pittsburgh’s scheme reliance on specific lateral techniques—combined with moving Jones between right tackle and left tackle early in his career—magnified his raw footwork tendencies.
In Dallas, where the mandate for tackles is establishing a hard, physical point of attack and protecting the pocket on quick drop-backs, Jones' raw power, aggression, and size would be leveraged far more naturally.

It’s AI. You should try it out if you haven’t. Google Gemini is in chrome by default

Careful though especially with stats or sukmaries including more than a single subject like this. AI will return some crazy results like Marshawn Kneeland being part of our edge group.

I am hoping that Dallas comes to their senses on this desperation trade and Jones does not pass his physical. The 2027 draft is loaded and Dallas does not have that many draft picks. Our draft next year is now:
1, 2, 4, 6
So we're worried about our ability to draft another Drew Shelton in 2027?

Just cause we got a 4th back doesn't mean we didn't give them a 3rd and a 6th. The cost for us to acquire this player was literally a 3rd and a 6th. In return, we got the player and a 4th.
Still isnt a 3rd and a 6th for Jones whichever way your myopic perspective wants to look at it.

My only concern is that the problem still isn’t fixed. Don’t really care about the pick. Still the cost seems steep for someone who was probably going to be cut.

Similar to Lance and Mingo.
Try looking at it as.....did we get better in the OT room. The problem isnt fixed, but it;s a lot rosier than it was 24 hrs ago. Go check which teams pick before us in the Waiver claims, try working out whether he'd reach us, even if he cut?
Its quite conceivable that he's the best available and due to Steele,Shelton, Thomas we're close to desperate.
It's not perfect, but its an improvement.

Man, you guys. Let me rephrase it, a 3rd and 6th is too much for a bust and a 4th.
Espcially when you are seeing OT's come available, Ravens just made a Trade for a UDFA Tackle and Chicago is releasing a former 1st round 10th overall OT, Jedrick Wills..... Boys could have kept the draft pick and picked up the same caliber of player.

Really? The Bears cut Wills? He is better than Steele IMO.

Sat out all last year with knee injury.....how did he do in pre-season??? This is the problem too many opinions without knowing much about the nuances and particulars.

very true but the players are similar and just have to pick which is worse a knee injury vs Neck Injury... Jones cost a 3rd and 6th .. Wills will be a FA..

Watching clips of Jones he is big and agile, but his pass protection technique is just horrible. He lunges, his base isn't set, he reaches, his hand placement is poor and he drops his head. If he only played one year I'd say this is a guy who could very easily be fixed, but he has played 3 years and I'm sure the Steelers tried to fix this so I worry whether it's possible with him. Then you look at our guys. I think the world of Klayton Adams and like Riley too, but in year 2 Guyton was still doing all of these same things (maybe he turns the corner this year?) and Steele does a lot of it as well although his issues are a little different. So it's not like "see problem, fix problem" is going to be easy with Jones. Then you throw in the injury and the weight loss.I do think we made the team better because he is better than our 2 backup OTs, but I think we overpaid seeing as he may take a year to get healthy and is a free agent after this year.
Yup.

He can’t block.

But that's a spurious argument, you dont know anything about the severity of the injuries, nor how they've played, nor which player we actually preferred on scouting.....it's nowhere near as simplistic as you make out.
