What are you even talking about?

It would mean they wouldn't HAVE to pay him because they'd have a viable option with Hurts as backup.

That would help their leverage tremendously.
No it doesn't, lol.
DAK's leverage is 37.7 or free agency.
If Dalton throws for 500 yards and 5 TDs each of the last 2 days that makes zero difference to HIS leverage.
If DAL wanted to move on from Dak then Hurts would have been a fine pick.
But they clearly didn't.

And not coming out of round 2 with a CB last year would have been criminal neglect.

Dak:
Dallas we can resign Andy Dalton so we offer you 25M a year
Dak:
Dallas: OK for real tho, we offer you 28M a year
Dak:
Dallas: We were just playing here's that 35M per year deal from last year.
Dak:
Dallas :tears in eyes, we have officially placed the franchise tag on you for 37.7M but would like to offer you long term deal that allows us to lower the front end cap hits
Dak: OK, send me DeShaun Watson's contract. 4 year, $156,000,000, 110M GTD.
Dallas: Ok, Daddy

It's not leverage if it has no impact. Therefore, no, it doesn't help their leverage
I will never understand how people logically believe that Dak;'s leverage is fleeting.

It is a simple A or B option for Dallas.
A, Tag him at 37.7 to hold his rights
B. He is a free agent

Dallas has other options BEYOND Dak but it doesn't effect Dak's earning potential AT ALL.

This is absolutely correct. And you are right, it makes zero sense how some people can't understand this.

Maybe that’s why Philly drafted Hurts. They heard Dallas was interested!

If this was in anyway true, Dallas would have already forked the money and gave him the contract. Dak either gets tagged and plays or gets tagged and holdS out in that case dalton is the starter next season. He isn’t getting Watson money. Not by any team or teams. He will be on the market a lot longer then he expects hums that’s his mentality, same way he hasn’t got that contract him and his agent so desperately wanted.

Looks like the tank is on, they won't play a lot of players, again.
Lose Sunday, then may as well lose the next week. Get to 5-11, should be good enough for a top 10, depending all the other tanking teams.
Could get us up to 4th depending on Atlanta, Houston, and Carolina.

Kellen to Boise chatter picking up.

not that I thought we had any chance in the first place, but we are definitely not stopping Jalen Hurts and the Eagles if our defense is this decimated. They suck with starters in. Can’t wait to see how bad they suck with backups in.

Dalton isn't signed for next year boss.

If the Cowboys liked Hurts so much, they should've moved up a couple of spots un the 2nd to select him.

Would've helped their leverage in negotiating with Dak.

I know we needed a CB, but if they were that big on him, you take the QB every time.

They fancy Dak as someone they're willing to stick with, as long has he's able to augment their chances of success. Whether or not that might continue to be the case, throughout more years, or not, is yet to be determined. Hurts has become a hit in Philly. Right now, he's their guy.

Dallas will likely draft a secondary DB or two in the upcoming draft. I'm thinking they're willing to see what they have in Garrett Gilbert, when the preseason games are being played. He'll surely be a cheaper acquisition than what Jalen Hurts would be. Jerry and son could have given Hurts his opportunity to sign with them if they had managed their finances more wisely. Sadly, that's not one what they do, unlike what a wiser GM might have done.

You bet, just a matter who's best at tanking. It helps of course if the poor team is playing somebody like the Chiefs, or Packers, etc., they can still play pretty hard and still lose....
