CB McAlister Among Five Workouts
Posted by nickeatman at 12/17/2009 1:59 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

The Cowboys took a closer look at five players here at Valley Ranch on Friday. While four of the names are relatively unknown commodities, one of them is three-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

The Cowboys worked out Chris McAlister, who was released by the Saints about a week ago. McAlister, a long-time Ravens standout, was picked up by New Orleans a month ago and played two games with Saints. McAlister had just four tackles with a forced fumble that he recovered in overtime against Washington two weeks ago.

McAlister has played 11 seasons in the league, including his first 10 with the Ravens, where he was a perennial All-Pro selection and three-time Pro Bowler (2003, 2004 and 2006).

While one club source said McAlister looked sharp in the workout, it doesn’t appear the Cowboys are ready to sign him just yet. It’s usually one of those situations where they want to know what they’re dealing with, if or when an opportunity arises for them to get a cornerback.

The other workout players include RB Herb Donaldson, defensive tackle Henry Smith, linebacker Leon Williams and offensive lineman Cliff Louis. Most of those players are eligible for the practice squad, where the Cowboys do have one open spot after running back Chauncey Washington signed with the Jets this week.

That would make Donaldson, who played collegiately at Western Illinois and also spent some time with the Saints this season, a logical choice to fill the practice squad vacancy.

But I read that we never, ever brought in potential churn candidates on Fridays...

Really, pretty funny that we'd work out one guy from the Saints offense and one from the Saints defense. Might as well look for any edge. ;)

Wow I didn't realize the Saints cut him already. I still think he would be a good guy to have for depth, regardless of whether he has played for the Saints this year or not.

McAlister couldn't hurt in Dime and even Nickel packages. I'll take him over a young Ball right now.

We worked out a guy named Herb Donaldson? Really?

Oh, and yeah, lets sign McCallister. I'm actually suprised the Saints released him.

I'd like if we signed him. he's a smart veteran who could only help the young guys in the secondary at the very least.

Exactly.

He's only going to play in special packages anyway (if he even plays at all) but a few weeks in practice with him, and our young CB's could learn alot about the nuances of CB.

what is wrong with ball?

I think he is a good young player who appears to get a little better all the time.

I think when they signed mckenzie they just became to heavy at the position even with the injuries they have had.

Agreed.

But I like Ball as our dime safety, that we we can move McCallister to CB in our dime packages.

I don't understand all the hate on Ball either. He has played good.

On dime, bring Ball and Chris in, and SIT DOWN Scandrick. Well, Scandrick for the whole game, that is why I would take Chris and play Ball in Scanricks spot.

Ball has played well. He'll never be a legit starter but he's a good backup who we developed out of nothing. That's exactly the sort of player who you don't want to replace.

Sounds like we are getting for a run. Depth is good, vet depth is great...

I think Ball is a fine player but can he really be trusted in a key stretch in December? I'd rather have the veteran who can probably play at the same level as Ball.

with Hamlin back, and Ball moving back to 4th CB

I dont' see us signing McCallister

Maybe Dallas is thinking about moving Ball full-time to backup safety and emergency CB, so they're looking for CB depth if they make the move.
