Cowboys worked out speedy WR Chad Jackson

You guys realize that we are not looking at him to be a starter opposite Austin, right???

The guy would be like 6th or 7th on the depth chart if we even bothered to sign him anyways. Besides, we can take like 80 guys to camp, so why not take this time to get a look at a few guys and see if they have anything left.

If I remember his Wonderlic was really low.

Still, you don't exactly have to be a rocket scientist to learn our offense. Heck, even Roy Williams understands about 70% of his route adjustments after 2 years.

OMG

Precisely.

I was shocked that he fell apart so badly. Liked him in that Draft. Not really sure he is what we need. Am willing to see if he has the mustard. Low risk, potential high reward.

I thought we weren't looking for WRs though. ;)

About as low risk as it gets.

Dude has some skills. Ray Sherman, work your magic.

he was also a returner...and he had won the best hands competition coming out....in the competitions he took 4 W's.....this guy is still raw sign him up see what he has hes young just 24 yrs of age...i remember i was hoping we would draft him...

It is still somewhat disconcerting that the Patriots gave up on him that quickly after making him a high 2nd round draft pick. They basically gave him one season. I'm assuming he must have been doing something in the offseason in 2008 that pissed off the FO for them to release him.

If coach Sherman can resurrect him he will establish himself as the premier WR coach in football.

I wonder what he would say about Roy if he didn't have to censor himself.

I think the Patriots are the type of team that thinks they can replace any player at any time. Cutting a guy isn't a big problem for them because they usually work some sort of draft day trade and replenish whatever they cut.

Whatever they have over the league, I wanna know. They always get great value for their drafting trades.

Chad Jackson worth a try but I would like to see RW11 replace with either Vincent Jackson or Brandon Marshall.....

Was this the guy with 4.4 speed and 5 flat hands? Also didnt the Patriots already decide he couldnt play?

I don't think Chad Jackson is the answer, but we really need a speedy down the field WR. We had very little down field passing attack this year. i think if we could add this dimension, we could figure out how to use Roy Williams better and people would stop be so frustrated with him.

Since Ogletree was mentioned in the original post, it made me curious as to what Ogletree's actual speed is? Anyone know?

I've heard 4.38 or so - not slow by any means.

edit: 4.36 at the Combine
short shuttle: 4.08
3 cone drill: 6.67
6 1/2" 196 lbs

Very quick and fast and not small.

I like Austin, Hurd and Tree a lot.
Crayton is a very steady pro (with a big mouth).
I've still got high hope for Williams. It seems to me that he and Romo need to spend the offseason watching tape of last years games and discussing what they were each thinking on every play (and maybe even some film from his good days in Det.) instead of just playing catch on the practice field.

That said, you never know if or when players are going to go down with injury and I'm all for competition, so bring him in for camp and see what he can do. It took Jimmy Smith 3 teams before he made an impact.

I'd like to see this happen.

Only played 2 years there:

2004
29 Catches, 648 yards, 22.3 average, Long 81 yards, 6 TD's

2005
88 Catches, 900 yards, 10.2 Average, Long 80, 9 TD's

i don't know what he means he wasn't much of a receiver in college, those are pretty good college numbers and it's not like he was playing DIII. He just hasn't done much in the NFL. People talk about us being bad at drafting and grooming WR's, the Patriots under Bellichek have had to bring in all their talent from FA.

I don't know lately it seems they have been doing a pretty good job of it, hitting on a 7th rounder in Crayton and hitting a home run so far with Austin who as we all know wasn't even drafted. And Hurd while mostly a special teamer is not a bad depth WR. I would say the team has improved leaps and bounds in the development department. That is not even counting Ogletree who they are developing right now.

I've been saying for a few weeks that I hope we can get another WR who can stretch the field (along with Austin, of course).

Since we don't have to give up picks, guarantee him a contract, etc., it may be worth giving him a look for a few months.

Worst case, cut him. Best case, we end up with a potentially decent WR who may help the team.

That's what the off-season is for.

I'm not sure what to make of Hurd as a WR. He's a good ST player, however.

To me, Hurd appears more of a possession wideout, like Crayton and R Williams (though Williams does have very good speed).

I see Austin as a guy who can stretch the field or make the tough possession catch (i.e., he's versatile).

As for Ogletree, I'm not sure what his strenghts are at this stage. But as of today, he seems to be the quickest WR of the lot - maybe a R Wayne type of wideout?

Reggie Wayne is the prototypical possession wr.

Wayne 6'0" 198 lbs 4.45 in the 40 36" vertical

Ogletree 6'1/2" 196 lbs 4.36 in the 40 36" vertical

So Otree is physically quite similar but Otree is taller and faster. I really hope this kid develops because he would give us some quickness that we are sorely lacking at WR and he is not small. He also looks like he can run routes properly, catch the ball cleanly and generate separation.

If we can hit on a couple of OL picks and Otree can win the #2 spot and put up 800-900 yards and 6 TDs we will be a much better offense.

Can anyone give me the downside to signing this guy and giving him the offseason and training camp to show if he can or can't contribute?

Seems like the textbook definition of low-risk, high-reward to me.

Oh great, another WR for you to sweat all off-season.

:D

He'd take the spot we've been saving all this time for Matt Jones?
