Think about it.

Romo will turn 37 next year. If they keep him under glass, as they appear to be doing, he will not have played a meaningful snap of football since November of 2015. In 2015, he played what amounts to three games (he was hurt in the third quarter of both the Eagle and Panther games), suffered two injuries, and ended up injured in a preseason game. He also has a back injury that requires practice modifications for him to manage.

With the injury history, lack of recent activity on the field, his age, and the Cowboys unwilling to expose him to opposing defenses, if you were a team looking for a QB, why would you trade assets for this player?

Everyone understands all of that and they are valid points but it only takes one team thinking all they need is a QB and willing to take a chance. It appears to me Dallas doesn't want to blow that chance, no matter how small it is. They also don't want to go into the playoffs without Romo as he backup.

But there's the conundrum, right? How can they be in fear that he won't make it through a meaningless game, but have confidence in him being the backup, and making it through a win or go home game?

Because they have no choice if Dak gets hurt in the playoffs. That's doesn't mean they have confidence he can take the hits but at that point they have to roll the dice and see how far he can go.

There have been games in which Tony was the backup and Sanchez was inactive, so Jerry, Stephen, and Jason were ready for Romo to play if Dak went down. Since we have the first seed locked up, I don't think they are real hot on Tony getting banged around by the Eagles in a meaningless game, especially if Dak goes down. It leaves Tony healthy to start for the playoff run.

So, they activate Sanchez Sunday, then go back to the normal QB setup with Tony as the backup for the playoffs, assuming Dak is good to go.

OK, so does that mean that they will dress three QBs in the playoffs? To protect against Romo leaving the game along with Prescott?

It's insane. Either he's healthy, or he's not. And, to think that they are preserving trade value by refusing to play him is the height of insanity.

This also might be out of respect to Romo. Or even his own preference. I don't imagine it's too flattering to be the whipping boy that steps in because you don't want the actual players getting hurt. THAT is a job better suited to Sanchez.

At least it's a possibility.

That's a question they will have to answer. I think the trade value is secondary to his availability for the playoffs. Jerry himself said it's not worth risking him for a few snaps. So did he mean risking his playoff availability risking his trade value, or both? Who knows.

Dak will play at least the first half but it's ridiculous to play Sanchez if Romo is the backup and needs the work. This is an opportunity for Romo to work off some of the rust. It's going to be a stupid move if we don't play him some.
The thought of Cleary blocking Romo's blindside is troubling to say the least....

Too lazy to read the entire thread, but I'd imagine someone by now has said, with Tyron out, you really don't want to play Dak much, if at all, and certainly don't want to play Tony.

I would agree with that/those someone(s).

EDIT: Paniolo, good to see there's some folks like yourself thinkin out there.

I think it's stupid. If he is too soft to play part of a game without getting injured then he shouldn't have a roster spot. Play Dak and Romo.

Yeah, because the Eagles are going to come out headhunting. Can you imagine how many double A gap blitzes they'd dial up if Tony was in the game?

If Sanchez is actually getting solid protection, I'd put Tony in, but I can understand the reasoning.

If Dak only starts a quarter, does he still get credit for the Win if Dallas wins the game? He's tied for most wins in a rookie season right now.

Garrett had lead this team to 13-3 I will trust his judgement. I say that as a person who would play Romo if it were my call to make but then it is not my call it is the HC's call to make.

Not worth letting your biggest trade chip get injured

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! and Thank you again!

If Romo gets injured we will get nothing for him and then will also have to eat that salary.

How many times have we seen backups come in and look good in a game. All without ever practicing with the first team for like ever.

Romo doesn't need the practice. We need to protect our trade investment.

Wonder if Romo just doesnt want to play. Refuse to believe the coaches are saying keep him out.

My guess they are absoutley keeping him out of the game. They do not want any part of Romo running this offense. There is no upside at all for the coaches or the front office. If he looks great and then Dak struggles a little in the playoffs, do they lose with Dak or pull him. If he plays like crap or gets injured again, then they can't trade him.

Romo is a pro and does not need to play a lot to be ready to go. MIght take him a series or two but that is it.
