Should we move to Tyrone Crawford to DE? We played him there in the second half against Washington and he played pretty well including that sack where he just completely abused the RT. On top of that here's an interesting tweet he said after the game.

I have no problem moving him to left DE and starting tank at RDE. I don't know if he's fast enough, but not opposed to seeing what he has.

Our D always gets these skinny DTs, fast twitch DTs and as a result they get injured and hurt. Get done fat knighton type DTs please.

Yes he did move the tackle back pretty easy playing DE, might as well so Collins can get more reps

I think all things being equal he's a better 3-4 DE/4-3 DT than he is a 4-3 DT. Just not enough "quick twitch" to be an effective full-time 4-3 DE.

Yeah give him a "trial", see what he can do until we get Lawrence back who should hold down one side for most snaps.

If he was anywhere near worth his contract, he'd produce a little better at either position. That fat contract was to play the under tackle; now it looks and sounds like he can't do it. Add to that, Cedrick Thornton is struggling. Our DL is just a total mess. Right now McClain seems to be the only guy playing with any consistency.

Why not?

Crawford at LDE---McClain at 3---Thornton at 1---Mayowa at RDE

Collins, Irving, Tapper in reserve. DLaw waiting in the wings.

This is an indictment of Crawford's conditioning and effort. Every time he speaks, I am left in awe of how this guy was signed to his current deal.

Tyrone Crawford: After games when I play under tackle I feel like I got hit by a bus. After playing DE, "I feel like a fricken butterfly."

After many games of playing under tackle and feeling like you got hit by a bus you got paid lovely for it.

The fact that they drafted Collins in the 3rd tells me they're considering the idea of replacing Crawford at 3T at SOME point in the future, assuming they can develop a better fit. My guess is that the front office tried to get cute by signing him to a big deal early and he never lived up to it in the eyes of the coaching staff.

As it stands now, Lawrence is probably your best RDE this year. If Crawford is your best SDE (who knows at this point?) and you can get similar production at 3T from your rookie 3rd round pick or even McClain / Thornton / whoever, then why not? Anything to get your best front four this year. Let future pieces fall where they may.

Haven't paid attention to Seattle's alignment this year but when Mebane was there he played LDE as a 5 technique mostly. Basically just two gapping that side, he was a beast there and it worked well. But, they also used Irvin and Clemons/Avril I think as "LEO" type strongside backers to rush the passer.

They also had a ton of talent so being creative was easy. We don't have a pass rush and Wilber/whoever aren't near those guys caliber.

But, once Lawrence comes back, playing around with TC at end and Irving at DT or McClain/Thornton on run downs would be worth an experiment in my opinion at least. At the very least it might be stout against the run.

Not sure how many snaps Irving has had at DT but he was efficient in the snaps he got last year, we have to find a way to generate some kind of pass rush occasionally and get more production out of the DL. Maybe Collins will show enough to warrant attention at some point. I hope.

Do we know how much it will cost us on the cap to cut Crawford this offseason? Would like to see that money go to a premier DE to bookend D Law. And then just roll with Collins, Thornton, and McClain at DT.

They've been doing a hybrid one/two gap front ever since Carroll came on board. We tried it with one of those UDFA scrubs in camp when Kiffin first got here but it never stuck. Why we didn't just go with it in transitioning from Rob Ryan's defense to this is beyond me. We STILL have personnel better suited for the old scheme.
