Should we move to Tyrone Crawford to DE? We played him there in the second half against Washington and he played pretty well including that sack where he just completely abused the RT. On top of that here's an interesting tweet he said after the game.

It is probably the best move all the way around because then we have a nice 3 man rotation at tackle and it helps Crawford out health wise and it helps us get through this year at DE.

I like the idea....

Everything should be on the table at this point. Can't blame everything on Hayden now. Crawford simply is not getting it done at a key position in this D. Collins does add more pass rush, I just wonder if he can hold up vs the run. Maybe they put Irving back inside where he appears to be more effective.

Can't over-react after 2 games. Yes, the defense vs. the run needs to improve. But more than two games needs to be the "yardstick".

I think all things being equal he's a better 3-4 DE/4-3 DT than he is a 4-3 DT. Just not enough "quick twitch" to be an effective full-time 4-3 DE.

It's not unheard of for a four-man line to have one defensive end at the five technique, especially if we are following Seattle's model.

Crawford plays 3-tech at 285 lbs, Collins at 311 lbs. Collins is the future, coming off broken foot and no training camp. Maybe play Crawford back inside when we go on 3rd downs. His playing weight is about what we need at DE, we have all these 245, 240 pound guys. I was all for leaving him at 3-tech, but he very strong, so after playing inside he has the strength to walk the RT back to the QB. Think the other Crawford is about 288 lbs, so rotate them on the strong side with Lawrence (265) and Mayowa (240)on the weak side. Irving can rotate in as needed. Thronton should be backing up McClain. Next year we will need a 1st round DE - one of the bigger guys like the kid from Florida State - DeMarcus something ? And a backup 3-tech behind Collins. (As well as a host of other defensive positions).

I could see next year's draft being a DE, S and CB.

Haven't paid attention to Seattle's alignment this year but when Mebane was there he played LDE as a 5 technique mostly. Basically just two gapping that side, he was a beast there and it worked well. But, they also used Irvin and Clemons/Avril I think as "LEO" type strongside backers to rush the passer.

They also had a ton of talent so being creative was easy. We don't have a pass rush and Wilber/whoever aren't near those guys caliber.

But, once Lawrence comes back, playing around with TC at end and Irving at DT or McClain/Thornton on run downs would be worth an experiment in my opinion at least. At the very least it might be stout against the run.

Not sure how many snaps Irving has had at DT but he was efficient in the snaps he got last year, we have to find a way to generate some kind of pass rush occasionally and get more production out of the DL. Maybe Collins will show enough to warrant attention at some point. I hope.
Seattle is a 4-3 defense. Mebane played 1-tech DT. They did play around with the scheme when Red Bryant (325 pounds) played LDE. He would sometimes 2 gap which let them shift things and use a small RDE.

I was thinking about this after the Washington game. Since we're not getting much pressure anyway, maybe we should go big across the line, which would at least help us against the run. Start Irving at RDE, McClain at 3-tech, Thornton at 1-tech and Crawford at LDE. We could bring in the ends (Mayowa and Jack Crawford) to spell them on passing downs and let Maliek Collins spell the interior guys.

Depending on how well that lineup works, we can decide whether to play Lawrence at RDE or LDE when he comes back.

I agree not to overreact but if you see a weakness, it isn't too early to make corrections either. We only have a 16 game season. So if there is a way to get a more productive front 4 on the field... I'm all for it. I never thought Crawford was all that good at the "under tackle" anyways. To be honest, I never thought he was all that good. Solid.. yes, serviceable, yes but certainly not great.

DE is much harder to find and more expensive and it looks like he can beat the tackle with brute force, bull rush moves and also setup the edge for runnining plays.

We need to get bigger DT, 320 lbs that are hard to move than these 290 DT that get injured after 4 games

Well, if he becomes a pretty good DE, then all of the sudden his contract looks great for a pass rusher.

This is an indictment of Crawford's conditioning and effort. Every time he speaks, I am left in awe of how this guy was signed to his current deal.
When I made my thread everybody said his attitude was fine. Lol same people that hate Jerry are just like him

It's a flux situation... There are 3 more guys who are going to be contributing at DE very shortly.

Until Collins gets up to speed, Crawford is going to have to stay at DT.
