Has he came near those numbers in any other season, yes or no?
Why would Atlanta take the big cap hit if there were no issues?
As Spags would say, "If he's so good why is he available?"
Whether he's had another season of that caliber or not, it still doesn't mean its statistically honest to just throw numbers away at your discretion. Just like I can't throw away his worst season.
Besides, silly rabbit, everyone knows that if you're truly worried about outliers effecting your average, then the best thing you can do is use the median method to get an average.
Do you want to do a median comparison between Morgan and Price?
Price .. 54 catches, 800 yards per season
Morgan .. 35 catches, 474 yards per season
Quite a bit of difference, if you ask me. Especially considering Morgan is unhappy here.
And actually, the Falcons saved $2 million against the cap this year by cutting Price. That's what they owed him in base salary for this season. Its not until 2006 that they have to eat the accelerated 5.7 million remaining on the signing bonus, and his base salary that year would have been 4.4 ... so, really, the net cost against the cap is only $1.3.
Which reminds me, speaking of nets ... I don't think this has been metioned before, if we want to do a net cost of what it takes to upgrade from Morgan to Price you have to subtract the $1 million in base salary Morgan was going to make this year that the Cowboys are no longer obligated to pay from whatever Price signs for. As long as we release Morgan, its basically like getting an automatic $1 million dollar rebate for the purchase of a Peerless Price.
As to why the Falcons cut him, obviously he's not a #1 WR and he was getting paid #1 WR money. The didn't want to pay him #1 money if he couldn't do the job. The good thing is that the Cowboys won't be asking him tobe a #1 WR. If he'll just put up his median average, I'll be more than happy. And if he truly is the reason for the Falcons inability to have a legitimate passing attack, we'll soon see if another Falcons WR tears it up this year in his absence. My money is on no.
As it is, if signing a released veteran player to provide depth is truly a crime, then the Aaron Glenn signing is truly horrible. He doesn't play special teams either. And neither does Anthony Thomas for that matter, at least not noticably well. I don't remember such an outcry when they were signed.
