Nope.
I say no. You dont draft a guy with a comp 4 with they eye on him being the future at QB.
A comp 4th is a guy you hope can become a high end backup. At that point you are hoping for the next AJ McCarron
One decent practice and everybody jumps the gun. No, he will be lucky to be a decent backup.
I completely understand what your saying. However my view of is at that position in the draft the odds are so slim you will find a starting caliber QB let alone a franchise QB, you cant rationally draft him with the expectation that he will become your starterI disagree. When you draft a guy you draft based on where you think he will go. You draft based on "value". The Seahawks didn't' know Russell Wilson would be Russell Wilson. But they were willing to invest a 4th rounder in him just to see.
Even with Romo. Romo was here behind nearly everyone. They invested far greater in Henson but for some reason they kept Romo along. They didn't draft Romo. Not even a 7th rounder. But they were willing to give him a phone call and risk him being picked up by another team.
The NFL has a system. That system is draft based on measurables and game film. But what measurables and game film don't show is someone's heart. Someones potential. How they react to adversity. If you could measure that on film than these scouts jobs would be far easier.
But this is a land where Jamarcus Russell was considered the best QB prospect in the draft. Where Joey Harrington and Ryan Leaf were considered future HOF'ers.
So does this mean Dak will be Romo? No. Not at all. I'm just saying just because the guy was a 4th round pick doesn't mean they didn't value him or they only see him as a backup. I don't think you draft for "backups". Unless you are the 2009 Cowboys. But no real organization drafts for backups and says to themselves "You know what? This guy will be a GREAT BACKUP". When teams go into even the 7th round they are expecting to find a STEAL. Someone contribute for them at some point in their careers.
Thats my opinion. Not the criteriaWait, is this the criteria? I thought this would be a question if he will prove to be the QB of the future, now it seems you are basing this on "He was picked in the fourth, so there is no way".

Totally agree. Drafting is about several things - the physical tools, mental makeup, development time needed, health, other question marks, etc.
If Dak plays at a bigger school with better coaching does he get drafted higher? Very likely.
If Manziel signs with another school and Showers is a two year starter at A&M, is he drafted much higher than UDFA? Very likely.
But if either guy is given time and proper coaching, either one could end up outplaying their draft position by a mile.
Dak can develope into a starter. Im not betting on him but thats a bet I can easily lose.I don't disagree with that sentiment. Dak was tied to the Cowboys far before the draft. I knew he would end up here. I know there was talk about them trying to trade for other QB's in the draft and I don't deny that but one name that was consistently linked to the Cowboys was Dak. There's something there. It may be nothing more than a backup. When you scout these guys I don't think you scout and say "This guy can be a decent backup here". I think you see the potential there that he can be a starter. But you just never know what a guy has until he steps on that field and gets meaningful playing time. I always wonder would Tony Romo have been Tony Romo somewhere else. Like if he never got that shot here what would've happened to him? For some guys they clean house at practice but can't bring it when the lights turn on. Some are the opposite.
One thing is for certain is that Dak as a prospect was a decent to average prospect. That's where the 4th round grade came from. That doesn't mean his ceiling is that of a backup. It just means as a prospect he had value of a 4th rounder.
I agree with you. I don't know what either guy has. But both seem to be good guys who want to learn. That can take you a long way in this league. If Jamarcus Russel had better work ethic the sky could've been the limit for him.
I hope this preseason Showers and Dak get time with the 1st team. One thing I do like about Dak is that he has played well against solid competition in college.
People are afraid to make the comparison or to even say the two names in the same sentence but i'm not. There's a little Russel Wilson there with Showers. I'm not saying he will ever become that. For all I know he may never even make it past the 3rd string position on the depth chart. But I saw enough from him last year to want to see more.
One thing I never got is what Moore did other than be a Linehan favorite. I was rooting for him like I do all Cowboys but in my eyes Moore, Showers and Dak were all on the same level and should've been but it seems Moore was the favorite to win that backup job.
I wanted a different angle on it. I wanted to see what peoples cut and dry predictions were to a question has many variables.I think our options to vote "yea" or "nay" were entirely too limited. We need another one that says "who the hell knows?" Will one or both become QBs of the future? It appears only time will reveal the answer to that question.
So far, the bulk of the throws both Dak and Showers have thrown in camp have consisted of check downs. It'll take more than that to constitute a legitimate starter or even a backup. At least, they're getting some needed experience and reps.
Perhaps in time they'll be comfortable actually throwing downfield but not so as yet. Anyhow, the preseason games to come should provide somewhat interesting information in that regard. Saturday night can't get here soon enough, if you ask me . . . can't wait.

Plus whats the fun in a poll when 90% of the people would likely pick "who the hell knows"![]()

Wilson was drafted with a relatively high 3rd round pick, not 4th. And the Seahawks had just signed Matt Flynn in FA. I believe it was a new coaching staff and regime who literally had to build that team through the draft. They had a plan.
Wilson won the job in pre-season and was named the starter his rookie year. This is not the NFL of old and Dak is not a high pick. The game is geared towards the offense and I see no reason the "stash" Prescott as if he's a 1st rounder we want to develop. Had Moore not gotten hurt, Prescott wouldn't even be the back-up. Prescott may or may not be a good NFL QB and the future of this franchise. But to believe he is and bypass drafting a QB in the future because we want to see Dak develop is silly. The position is too important.
Do you believe that he will or dont you
