The Rangers are primarily owned by two men, one in Dallas and one in FW. They had to pay way more for the team than they wanted to expected to thanks to the bankruptcy auction... And way more than Cuban had to pay for the Mavs. I don't think it's some toy where they don't care if they lose money.
Cuban's checkbook is his one saving grace. He is willing to spend, and spend big, and that's been a huge positive. But he ran off Don Nelson because he wanted to basically be the GM. He had a huge hand in not bringing back Steve Nash. He runs on the court during player fights. He stands in the huddle at timeouts. He's constantly antagonizing the league commissioner. I can't see how any of those things are a positive.
He did overcome those negatives for one year by having a great, great player (Dirk) who was acquired before he bought the team and then overpaying through the league's soft cap for years until one year things fell into place.
And as far as Odom goes, I guarantee you that Carlisle (a great coach and definitely one of the few of Cuban's great hires) wanted that bum gone long ago. But Cuban, much like Jerry, always tries to buddy up to these guys and kiss their butt instead of dealing with them. So I don't see getting rid of Lamar as some great move on his part. It really should've been done weeks ago.
