Culpepper released

Once again, it takes the Dolphins' 'braintrust' 4 weeks to figure out what the rest of the world already knew.

Nobody was going to trade for him.

Why did they sour on him so much? I really don't understand the whole Culpepper situation.

I know, I know... There are those who will say "He sucks!" But this guy was right behind Manning a few years ago when Payton broke those passing records. So now he rushes back too quickly from a knee injury that demands a long recovery time, and now nobody wants him?

I don't get it. Maybe he's not as good as he looked with Moss, but he was still one of the better QBs in the NFL. Was the knee so bad that he'll never be able to throw the same way? Was it something personal with Cameron?

Call me crazy, but if the price is right, I'd prefer him as the 3rd guy over Moore, Baker, or Bartel.

Not going to happen I know, but I've always liked the guy.

He lost Moss and got hurt.

His ego would never allow such a thing.

I've always viewed him as a guy who had all the physical skills you need to play quarterback but a guy lacking in the cerebral skills.

My money is on Jacksonville.

I think he's terribly overrated as a QB...

That said, I'd still rather have him than Brad Johnson.

Personally, I think the Dolphins are on the fast-track to Disasterville.

I don't like any moves they've made for the past several years.

I figure them for a Top 5 draft pick next season.

I don't care to sign him at all. I think he is one of the most overrated players in the last 10 years. Wouldnt surprise me to see Cleveland take a run at him,, give them a vet presence with the young guys they have.. and as over rated as he is,, he is still better than anyone cleveland has right now.

NO! Cleveland needs to stay the course. Take 2007 and play the young guys even if it means losing every game this year in order to lay the foundation for the future.
Yeah, lose every game this year. That's the ticket! :browns:

Look for the Pats to sign him as a back up. That is my bet just based on a hunch.

FINS CUT CULPEPPER

The Miami Dolphins have announced that the team has terminated the contract of quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

The news was disclosed in a one-sentence release from the team.

Culpepper's grievance against the team was scheduled to be heard on July 18. We assume that the grievance will not proceed, given that the goal was to force the franchise to allow him to participate in team drills during training camp, which opens later this month.

The move ends Culpepper's rocky tenure with the Fins after only one season. Acquired in a trade for a second-round pick, Culpepper was ineffective in four starts, and ultimately was benched. He required further surgery on a knee that was shredded in November 2005, and did not return.

His fate in South Florida was sealed after the team landed Trent Green. But instead of merely cutting Culpepper loose, the Dolphins hoped to finagle a draft pick for his services. At a mandatory minicamp last month, the team refused to allow Culpepper to participate in team drills, since a serious injury would have put the team on the hook for his entire $5.5 million salary. The move prompted Culpepper's grievance.

We previously heard that the Dolphins were suspicious that Culpepper's "cut me don't trade me" stance was the result of tampering by one of the teams that could be interested in acquiring his services.

Some league insiders believe that Culpepper is destined to land in Jacksonville, where he'd have a good shot at becoming the starter in 2008. We've heard that he's interested in joining the Packers, too.

With Rams quarterback Marc Bulger recently hinting about a possible holdout, St. Louis coach Scott Linehan might be toying with the possibility of bringing Culpepper in with a one-year deal aimed at protecting the franchise against the worst-case scenario with Bulger, whose financial expectations surely have increased in the wake of the Dwight Freeney deal.

I'd like to see him go to back to Minnesota or to Oakland. Or to Tampa Bay. Anywhere but Cleveland. If he goes to Minn or Oak, then they can use him to win a couple of games and help push Cle closer to last place.

Oakland seems obvious: put him in place to teach the similar Jamarcus and let Jamarcus sit for the first half of the season (or the whole first season).

If I were the Raiders, I would jump all over him and have him compete with McCown for the right to keep Russell's spot warm.

But Jacksonville sounds right. It would be the best place for him if he won the starting job, he'd be entrenched as I believe they are just looking for a reason to get rid of Leftwich and Garrard is no longer in favor.

And no, he would not come to Dallas. Not for third string money or the fact we have a closed competition.

Why not Cleveland?

I didn't see much of Frye or Anderson last year, but I saw plenty of Culpepper. There's just no real way to get across to people who didn't watch him - just how terrible he is at this point in his career. It would seem that he lived off his mobility, and a WR that was adept at the ad-lib, early in his career. He's got nothing, and I mean nothing left.

His scrambling was worse than anything we saw from Bledsoe. He was sacked 7 times a game for Miami. He had no feel for the offense and no chemistry with anyone. The only route he could seemingly connect on were 5 yard outs from the slot position. You might think it was injury related, but that's how he finished his career in Minnesota, pre-injury.

He won't go to Cleveland, likely - but with that offensive line, and that lack of talent at RB and WR - I would think we'd be ecstatic to see him go there. We could almost guarantee that #1 pick at that point.

I think the Texans or Atlanta would also be good spots for him. Who knows what Vick's future holds? As for Texas, well, Carr pretty much got pillaged. I don't know how a more imobile Schaub is going to avoid the same fate.
