Assuming this is true, then we never even got our shot at him although we thought we would have that shot. Why some automatically assumed that we just chose not to persue him or that he was ours for the taking is beyond me.
Vinatieri was available
for a couple of months before the Colts signed him. We had lots of time to bring him in but his asking price was seen as too high and we chose to pursue other options (two guys were on our radar but I can't think of their names right now). When most of those options were taken off the board we were left with Vandy and Vinatieri. We scheduled AV for a visit but the Colts signed him first, leaving us with Vandy as the only option.
Obviously, Parcells/Jones weren't all that enamoured with Vandy since he was the last guy we were considering. His attitude had been a problem in Indy for years and his accuracy was starting to slip, both reasons why the Colts let him go (they didn't offer him a contract when his was up).
We had an opportunity to sign Vinatieri as soon as he was released but he wanted a bigger contract than we were initially willing to offer. I bet Jerry would offer it now in a heartbeat though.
Lastly, I and many others on this and other forums, were less than thrilled with signing Vanderjagt. He had a reputation that was not encouraging, as a malcontent and a choker, neither of which I was anxious to have here.
