Personally, I think this is a good hire. He’s coached both the 4-3, and 3-4. He’s had more top defenses than any other candidates, including the prospect of keeping Dan Quinn. Sometimes, boring is better.

Signing 1 guy and "winning the draft" by signing the highest rated defenders from experts won't mean a thing. They need 3 new productive defenders with leadership. I don't care about any rookie they draft
Overshown looks to be a leader.

Zimmer's a good defensive mind, and I think he showed under Parcells that even if he doesn't know something (the 3-4 defense) that he's willing to learn and adapt. I think that's part of the reason he went on to more success after Dallas.

Not saying it's a great pick or a bad pick.

Just asking, "if he's top shelf, why is he available after all the other 31 teams and colleges have picked defensive coordinators?

Just looking for sane, non hyperbolic answers........so Jerry's Kids can let the others field this one.
I don't think we know how many interview requests Zimmer may have turned down the last couple of years. Dealing with the unexpected loss of his son in October 2022 after having lost his job that January may have caused Zimmer to take a step back away from his career. I'm not even sure he was seeking any DC jobs until the one in Dallas opened. Maybe nobody was knocking on his door before that but we certainly don't know that.

I mean, there are other former top DCs like Phillips and Ryan who also have not been hot commodities since their last NFL jobs, but it's hard to say that because they aren't wanted or simply only want a job on their terms. Phillips still seems to be trying to prove he can be a head coach with teams in the USFL and XFL.

I do hate that term position flex,it's another way of the saying jack of all trades and master of none..we need more masters and less jacks.
Exactly.

This was why I did not like Tyrone Crawford, when they started that flex crap. He would have been better if they put him at one position and left him there.

I think that messed up Bobby Carpenter as well. They moved him to so many LB spots every other practice. He was never able to learn one spot.

He was not exactly off the couch. He's been running analytics at Colorado on Deion's staff.
After being a HC. Nobody wanted this guy, but Jerry. Nobody even called this guy, but Jerry. This is a disastrous hiring.

So true, very few players can pull that off and be good no matter what position you put them in.. Woody,LA, Zach are the few that I can think of that could be great no matter where you put them, imo.

Now do championships. That one seems pretty easy to ignore for a lot of kool-aid drinkers.
I don’t understand the question. I was referring to the tweets from players, coaches and football industry people who commented.

He's a terrible hire, especially if you are trying to sell "all-in". This is deflating, and takes what little air was in the 2024 balloon out in one shot. This was a backwards move.
Did you have a preference of the available candidates? If so, who and why? Since Quinn was Washington’s second or third choice, their delays became the Cowboys delays.

I confess, I don't really know much about his defenses...but if what I'm reading is true, that he's very good at stopping the run, I'm in. We've got Harris, who can take care of the secondary. That leaves the pass rush, which most of our guys already know how to do.

I realize that's an oversimplification, but it seems like a better option than keeping someone who doesn't seem to care about anything but defending the passing game.

I get the whole pass defense thing, but they lost again because they couldn’t stop the run. Dallas doesn’t even have a Det style 53 defense in the playbook.

Also basically it’s saying Belichick is the best, but not against Shannahan. Zimmer is at the top regardless, but all the other coaches do about the same as Zimmer vs Shannahan.

So then look at Belichick and the Pats, they were winning most games so likely the other team had to pass. It’s kind of like if you had a good offense you’re going to do well against teams trying to catch up or keep up.

I’m not sure this is the right way to look at it but I’m sure that director of personnel AI lady put this together so it’s like get Zimmer.

We will see. I hope he don’t change the whole scheme. Does he run 4-3 or 3-4 or hybrid. Quinn played hybrid but wouldn’t bring blitzes.
