D.Smith Updates

There is no way Watkins is big enough to handle anything other than special teams and spot play this year. You're going to kill him if you try and play him every down.

and you Davis and coleman, so why would you play him on every down

wileedog said:
And if Davis is Davis, Coleman is every bit the aging alcoholic he's rumored to be, and Watkins still can't play, then what?

then your in the same hole, but with more cap space

His base salary last year was $900,000.......

Just looking at base salaries is like looking at Pamela Anderson from the shoulders up.

Davis is getting that, isn't he?

He's certainly worth more than the Clay Pigeon.

So since we've committed a decent salary to one goof-ball we should do it again?

The "too skinny"... I don't think so.

I think if he turned sideways he'd disappear.

and then when he gets injured, and Watkins steps in and does just as well, or close to the level he was playing at, then what?

and if he comes in is a complete bust then what?

What if..what if...

A complete bust?? Smith is much more proven, hence more unlikely to "bust" than any other option.

Dallas can address the obvious weak link on its defense with a young player who have proven to be at least adequate in the NFL in Smith or it can go with a player who's proven that he can't in Davis or an unproven second day draft pick. Considering the other options are a street free agent type in Pile or a long in the tooth free agent with personal problems who was willing to play for peanuts.

I would say he is worlds better than Davis.

Obviously if we don't sign Smith someone with a bit more pull is saying something else.

If Watkins was 1/5 th of the future hall of famer you guys are making him out to be he should have absolutely no problems beating out Smith if signed (if he's half as mediocre as you make him out to be). Let's just hope that Watkins turns out to be as "special" as Pettiti turned out to be as a rookie starter.

I don't know why anyone could be anti-competition to this position with the current cast of characters.

Except this one has proven he can play. He's 3rd round draft pick not a Europe reject, and has played and contributed on a SB defense.

And you guys that don't want to get better because of a love affair with unproven guys on the roster make no sense at all.

FS has been a hole. A solid, young mid level free agent comes available that could fill the need for the foreseeable future and people are totally opposed to the idea.

Fans baffle me sometimes.

Yeah, I can see your point with the "unproven" angle.

That guy Ireland has no credibility in my eyes either.

Glad to see we are on opposite sides of the fence on this one Inman...

Now I know I'm right. :)

He also has character issues and there must be someone in the organization that doesn't rate him as highly as you do... go figure!

Just like you were right about Pettiti last year?

If so, God help us.

You mean the same organization that drafted Jacob Rogers?

Yeah, Rogers.

What makes it funny is that by drafting Rogers, Dallas became the first team in the history of the NFL to even make a bad 2nd round pick. Most teams hit on every single 2nd round pick they make!

Don't you have a college paper to type up or something. ;)

who keeps bringing up Petitti?

FS and being the starting RT when your unready are TOTALLY different.

NFL Protection schemes are MUCH more complicated then college ones( see Steve Spurrier try his schemes in the nfl.) College FS isnt much different then NFL fs roles. You need to tackle well, and have good awareness, besides that the zones are going to be VERY similar if not exactly what they were in major college football.

And more: Petitti was forced to start in a big spot for the O-line before he was ready. He might be pretty decent one day. Watkins doesnt need to start. Also Watkins was said to be on some nfl analysts boards as a 2nd round talent.

I find it funny that when Canty is called "the steal of the draft" everyone worships him and even has no gripes about him starting over the proven greg ellis. Yet Watkins gets called "a steal in the draft" yet folks have a tough time believing he'll start over Davis or Coleman. ****

My God!

Someone that talks "sense".

We better close down the forum. Our quota of intelligent posters has been breached.

Hey! Dallas is batting around .500 in the same round Rogers was selected. They did pick up Julius Jones in that same round, you know.

...of course, he's been battling injuries and missing a ton of games, so Dallas is really batting around .250 for that round, but who really cares...

That was the point.

Everyone is not always right.

Just because the organization is passing on Smith does not automatically mean its the right decision.

Like I said before, if Smith is asking for the moon or the Vikes are offering it to him (and I'm sure the FO has a ballpark figure what he's looking for at this point), then I agree let him go. But if he's reasonable and we are passing on him, then going into this season with Davis, Coleman and Watkins is a mistake IMO.

Everybody makes 'em.

Even Winicki, its been rumored. :)
