It's funny, I seem to remember the Dak haters swearing up and down that they were opposed to paying huge money to a QB in general. That their argument was that big-money passers don't and can't and won't win anything because the advantage teams have with a QB working on his rookie contract is insurmountable. If we let him walk and traded for Wilson or Stafford...
They weren't like, "I'm actually super down to pay monster money to a QB. I just want to make sure, whoever it is, they're in their mid-30's and they also cost us several 1st rounders on top of everything." If Russell Wilson's name came up in the debates, it was usually as a cautionary tale, as if to say, "See, they won with him when they were paying him peanuts. They made the mistake of paying him real money, and it stopped being viable."
In reality, I think their idea was that we should be going all-in with a rookie, since they assumed they would easily be just as good as Dak from day 1 and they'd give us 5 cheaper seasons. They would've had us trade 3 or 4 1st rounders to go get Trevor Lawrence, if they're being honest. But they aren't trying to be honest about that right now since that looks insanely stupid and disastrous.
