I think your logic is sound except it is too early to think about getting within 1 score when the game is still in the second quarter. You had to think the Lions were going to get at least 5 more possessions in the 2nd half and would score on at least 2 of them. In fact, the Lions had 5 2nd half possessions, not including the last one to end the game and they scored on 4 of the 5 and had the FG blocked on 1. Watching the way the defense was playing Schotty should have been thinking about getting to a certain number of points, not about getting close. The logic that Schottenheimer followed there was sound.
Team was down by two scores at that point and kicking the field goal would bring them within one score.
In fact, that decision helped the Cowboys get within 3 points in the 4th quarter.
Every decision leading up to that point is subjective of course, but they went from 3 points down in the 4th quarter to losing by 14 points.
You cannot expect your offense to score 45 points very often to win games where the other team scores 44 points.
There of course is plenty of blame to go around from the coaches to the players and even the referees, but in the end it comes down to the same thing it has most of the season .. bad defense.
Normally, I would kick the FG myself, but seeing the defense giving up big plays and the way the Lions were exploiting the weaknesses in the defense, I would have gone for the first down. The offense is their strength, not the defense. I think kicking the FG is in a way relying on the defense to hold the Lions which they did not do at all in the 2nd half.
