well, yes and know. he got a 450M contract. unprecedented in NFL. KC took a risk handing out that contract. but allowed them to manipulate the cap. Mahomes took a lot of upfront money, so as they say now, upfront money is worth a lot more than money down the line. it was risky for both, but worked out for both.
Mahomes is pretty locked into around the high 40s low 50s for the next three years before they can really start freeing up some cap again with higher base salaries.

5 mill this year, 2 mill next two seasons for base salary.

A dude that got outplayed by Brock Purdy in the playoffs has a larger cap hit than already top 5 GOAT (and rising) QB Mahomes.
The 'dude' was never competing head to head with Purdy. That entire narrative is media inspired hogwash. He was head to head with SF defense and nevermind the team dynamic of football.

In baseball, pitchers get similar treatment and before you go an claim different sports, consider that the differences makes the game of baseball more predictive and not less. Pitchers actually do for the most part go head to head with the batter.

Even then baseball, and football metrics, has demonstrated that pitcher/QB win totals are not predictive. The whole parity discussion should make that obvious.

That’s a bit useless in determining a contract
You can manipulate cap hits in various years
At anyone time you can’t really compare contracts
Average and what’s guaranteed is really much more important than a single year
Dak Prescott’s contract doesn’t look good in any of them.

The risk would be due to injury not performance.

It probably wont be, but the Cowboys have 3 options.

1) Eat the bulk of his cap hit now and create more flexibility next year or even more leverage in contract negotiations.
2) Restructure the deal push money into years he isn't even on the roster.
3) Extend Dak at an even higher AAV....the biggest piece here that worries me is that you are negotiating with Dak at a time when he has total control. The Cowboys need to get his cap number down and the first two options are not that great.

I think you're right that Dak's cap hit wont be that high, but I'm not sure the options to lower that hit are that great.
Bottom line......we are going to find out how committed they are to him going forward.......

Mahomes took less so the chiefs can build around him. That contract will be a bargain. Reminds me of Tyron’s deal.
Players Association and other quarterbacks that want a new deal are not happy with Patrick. They will love Lamar, Hurts, Burrow and Herbert though.

Dak was a bargain for five years.
With his new contract and the guaranteed money to date, in 7 total seasons Dak has earned $131M.......and for that he has 2 playoff wins.

With his new contract and the guaranteed money to date, in 6 total seasons Patrick Mahomes has earned $79M....and for that he has 11 playoff wins and 2 Super Bowl wins (3 appearances)

If we had a lesser QB we probably wouldn’t have two playoff wins over those seven seasons and may not have even made the playoffs. Some of you think it’s easy finding a generational QB. It’s not our fault KC struck gold with Mahomes. I’m convinced some of you would rather have a scrub at QB that was making peanuts even if it meant missing the playoffs every damn season. It’s become beyond tiring watching fans complain about Dak’s contract. Go build a team and sign a cheap QB and see if that makes you happy.
