This is true only if Jerry still wants Dak on the team
Jerry Jones could end his contractual relationship with Dak Prescott today if he wanted. Negative salary cap implications are the only thing stopping him from pulling that trigger immediately if Jones wanted Prescott gone. Same applies to the backup quarterbacks. He would have already kicked Prescott to the curb if he had enough confidence in Cooper Rush and/or Trey Lance before today.
I am not sure what it is that Jones projects for some observers? Is he seen as some kind grandfatherly figure? Is it the false perception he is senile? Is it something else? I do not know.
Jones is not someone new on the scene. He has been around Dallas and the NFL for nearly 40 years. The <expletive> has shown he has made cold-blooded decisions if it gives him
what he wants.
Arlington, Texas resident footed $325 million-plus to build a stadium for a billionaire.
He flat out lied to Tony Banks, stating he would mentor Quincy Carter in his rookie season and then gave him a pink slip before the start of the regular season.
Tom Landry's time in Dallas was done when Jones bought the franchise. Instead of meeting Landry face-to-face and then flying Jimmy Johnson into town, Jones did
the reverse. Such an unceremonious end to a Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach. Dumped like yesterday's trash. Landry would not be the last Hall of Fame head coach he would dispense similar treatment.
Tony Romo was kicked to the curb as soon as The 2016 Team Chemistry Euphoria enraptured him like some fans and media alike. The in-season instantly demoted former franchise quarterback was not even graced with a
pretend make-believe competition for the starting position.
Those are just a
few examples. Jones is the owner. No one can stop him from doing whatever he wants--despite counterargument examples like his DNA Kid 'throwing him into a wall' when he tried drafting Johnny Manziel.
Jones wants Prescott on the team. He wants him on the team under contractual terms he agrees with.
Will Jones extend or re-sign Prescott under the terms he wants that Prescott will accept? That is the real 'if Jerry still wants Dak on the team' situation resting beneath all this ongoing what if speculation.
