How can anyone really think he meant that he regularly and literally tells people to pour honey on him if he encounters a bear?

I don't get the hoopla. He's just saying he's not afraid to fight a bear in response to Jerry saying he won't "Poke the Bear". What do you want him to say "I am terrified of the upcoming bear I have to face?". Seems we wouldn't want that either. I guess he could've said something else but it seems to me it was "tongue in cheek". So, who cares? Won't affect the game one way or another.
