I'm not happy with it because Prescott has to show that he can read blitzes and the book against the Cowboys has been to blitz them because we only begrudgingly utilize hot reads.
I'm also not happy with it for Prescott's development. There's so many things to learn and work on when you're a rookie QB and that's why I favor ANY rookie QB sitting for a year. The only QB's I can think of that started their rookie year and in the end benefited from it, IMO, was Roethlisberger and Wilson Only because they won a Super Bowl in their 2nd season and that may not have happened if they rode the bench.
But, all of the other QB's that started as rookies and flamed out I tend to think they may have had a chance if they sat out their rookie year.
It's just a lot to learn for any QB coming into the league and then you start to get the QB more in the mode of focusing on what they need to do to get some wins and survive instead of actually working on meaningful things long term like throwing mechanics, learning the playbooks, getting used to the speed of the game, recognizing defenses, developing anticipation, etc.
The positives is that the 2 QB's I mentioned that I think benefited from starting as rookies....Dak has some similarities to in terms of style. They were mobile QB's that threw well outside of the pocket. The big difference is that they had ferocious defenses backing them up.
But, this is where we'll see Garrett's ability as a coach. He's had 1 year under his belt without Tony and if he's a good coach, he should learn from his mistakes from last season. And if he's a good coach, he should be able to protect Dak, particularly with this supporting cast...and play to his strengths and shy away from his weaknesses.
There are some things that pique my interest about Dak playing this year. His throwing the ball in preseason has been spectacular. He's got enormous hands, not only good for holding onto the ball and throwing the ball in bad weather (something Romo isn't great at), but those big hands with great throwing motion mechanics and footwork can lead to some incredible passing compared to a similar QB with smaller hands. I also like his running ability, his ability to throw screen passes and perhaps we can modernize this offense with more RPO's.
I think our season is now coming down to our health on offense, our play from our TE's and our play from the safeties. If those are good, I think Dak can do a great ob and we can win a lot of game.s If those aren't good, it's going to be a rough season...again.
And hopefully, anybody with a room temperature IQ can put the 'I think Tony has 5 more years left in him' to rest, once and for all.
