Future Cap Hits is not the same as money owed to the player.

Dak has already been paid all money on his contract except 34 million that he'll make for the 2024 season and the 34M is not guaranteed.

Realistically the decision would be about the starting QB for 2025.
- Dak vs Trey Lance or 2024 draft pick.

- Dak's performance for 2023 & 2024 would make that a much easier decision in March 2025 than making the decision now.
his cap hit in 2024 with no restructure is 59 mill are you saying that wont hit until March of 2025?

I am saying dont pay dak again in exchange for losing all the superstars they have been developing

If there is another worthy qb to pay like that, then I would. Otherwise I would go cheaper or young on a qb with a stacked, team, and let the defense and weapons maybe take him to the post season
What makes Herbert worthy?

If he's not a top 5 QB, sucks that in all these years in the league we still have to mention this!

He never said he was, not that top 5 is the cut off for retaining a qb.

Potential and age.

I think a superior team can take a lesser qb to a superbowl, but we have seen what happens when dak has a lesser team or even a really good team(this is a known and proven thing). He should get 3 more years with a really good team

Herbert has potential, but it is unknown. I would break the bank over a unknown with potential before I would break the bank on something that has beed proven

Because if we’re unable to come to an agreement on an extension you run the risk of him entering free agency.
QB contracts are not like contracts for other positions.

Starting QBs get more than the last guy regardless of relative skill level. That happens even when the QB is 2 years away from free agency.

Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the league at this point but his average salary is 7th...

The Cowboys would only have to match any offer that Dak received in free agency because he'll always make more in endorsements as a Cowboys QB than with any other team.

Point is Dak has made a significant amount of money and still has more coming from the Cowboys and cannot be traded without his expressed consent. He has put himself in a very good position from an NFL player’s perspective. Somehow the Cowboys have to find out if they have a better alternative to Dak Prescott at the starting quarterback position. They are not in as viable a situation from an NFL franchise’s perspective. Dak’s next contract will be for $50+ million AAV from Dallas or some other team. I suspect he’s not particular which team secures his services. It is, after all, professional football.

There could be a part of Dak that wants to move on. He’s being lambasted by the fans every year. He’s certainly not appreciated by the Cowboys fan base. One can only speculate if endorsements would keep him in Dallas if he had a shot at free agency. If he was given an opportunity at free agency, that would be an indication the Cowboys are willing to lose him. A team could step up and offer him an amount of money the Cowboys don’t want to match or can’t match. They do have a couple of real big contracts coming up with CeeDee and Parsons. The safest way to assure hanging onto Dak is to extend him before he’s a free agent.

Win what? again if its SB or bust then really other than Mahomes what team has showed this brings home a trophy?
We haven’t made it out the divisional round while other teams led by young QBs are making it to conference championships and SBs.

No, I'm saying that they can make space in 2024 to handle the full 59M cap hit.

They currently have 126M of cap space in 2025.

Parsons new contract won't have a huge cap hit until 2025.

They can restructure other contracts in 2024 to push money into 2025.

QB cap hit in 2025 would either be relatively low for Dak's 1st year on the new deal OR low if they have a young QB.

Decision date 1: March 2024
- If Dak awesome in 2023: New Contract
- If Dak same as 2022: Wait until 2025.

Decision Date 2: March 2025
- If no contract already and awesome in 2024, Franchise Tag until new contract signed.
- If not awesome in 2023 or 2024 then why give him a 60M+ contract?

There's a clause prohibiting the Cowboys from designating Dak as a franchise or transition player should he play out his contract.

but all those QB's except Mahomes are getting paid WITHOUT a SB win...so is the "Pay everyone but the QB" producing trophies?
