Philly is not a Cowboy rival. Our rivial in my opinion is Washington, Steelers, and you might put the 49ers in there. The Eagles rival are the Giants. But since the Cowboys are Americas team, maybe everybody considers us their rivals.

The Commander rivalry started even before there was a Dallas NFL franchise. George Preston Marshall the Commanders owner of the period was totally against a team located in Dallas, and lobbied other team owners to deny the franchise.

Tex Schram secretly purchased the copyrights to "Hail to the Commanders" and told Marshall the only way his team could continue using the song was if he voted for the Dallas franchise. So the Cowboys came into existence and the Commanders got their anthem back.

The rivalry got turned up a notch when the Commanders hired George Allen who hated the Cowboys. Allen was caught sending scouts to Dallas to spy on Cowboys practices from a motel adjacent to the old practice facility on Forest Lane.

So the Commanders rivalry actually pre-dates the Cowboys franchise, it has had its ups and downs but the fact is the Cowboys have no bigger rivalry.

If you think about it...
The biggest rivals in the NFC EAST for each team:
Giants - Cowboys
Eagles - Cowboys
Commanders - Cowboys

Why. Somewhere in the last 45 years when the Giants, Eagles, Commanders were having good seasons we always had better and took them off the top of the East.

I don't think it's bigger than Washington vs. Dallas, although I truly hate the Eagles more than the Skins. When they cheered after Irvin was obviously seriously hurt, I'll never forget that.

Rich...........
when Rivera went down in Fed Ex last season, completely different reaction from Skins fans. Enough said.

This is an easy answer. Dallas is America's team and is one of the 3 elite teams in football (Dallas, SF and Pittsburgh with 5 SB wins). Every team in the NFC East feels they are Dallas' biggest rival because historically Dallas has been the most successful and the team to beat.

Have to agree with Phoenix T, that the Cowboys-Commanders is a traditional rivalry, maybe the NFLs best, and the Eagles games are bitter grudge matches each year. Either way, we always look forward to them each year, no matter what.

This year reminded me why I hate the skins soo damn much...I had started to feel sorry for them...they were like a turtle on its back.

Now, the arrogance is flowing and they suddenly think they own us just because of one fluke game and one good game on their part.
:hammer:
Every NFL team plays a terrible game during a long, 16-game season, and ours happened to be against a big rival. I wonder if Skins fans think they're inferior to the Giants since they got destroyed 36-0 in one game, because they sure love to cite our big loss to them as evidence that their team is better at, oh, just about every position on the field.

I did hate the Eagles more for a few years there around the pickle juice fiasco, but the Skins have come back with a vengeance.

PT, grudge matches are what make rivalries.

Rivalry or competition ...
Etymology: Late Latin competition-, competitio, from Latin competere
1 : the act or process of competing : RIVALRY: as a : the effort of two or more parties acting independently to secure the business of a third party by offering the most favorable terms b : active demand by two or more organisms or kinds of organisms for some environmental resource in short supply

2 : a contest between rivals; also : one's competitors
pixt.gif

Grudge
Etymology: Middle English grucchen, grudgen to grumble, complain, from Middle French groucier, of Germanic origin; akin to Middle High German grogezen to howl

1 a lingering ill will towards a person for a real or imagined wrong
Synonyms grievance, resentment, score
Related Words condemnation; offense (or offence), umbrage; complaint; peeve, pique

2 a deep-seated ill will <there's been a grudge between the two families for years>
: to be unwilling to give or admit : give or allow reluctantly or resentfully

I don't disagree with you Ispain1 ...I just think "Grudge" is a little more intensified version of "rivalry." Rivalry speaks a certain amount of sophistication; where as "grudge" is a little more raw!

These games have the making of a renewed retro-grudge/rivalry between the Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.

I stopped reading when you wrote ..."the 3 elite teams were based on having 5 SB wins. No doubt, this is truly an outstanding accomplishment, but what about the Miami Dolphins ...you want to tell me that their 17-0 Season does not qualify them as an "elite" team? And ...no one ...no one has repeated that eliteness!

Just because a team has never won a SB (or NFL Championship), it does not disqualify them from the "elite" team category. Just something to think about Cowchips.

Yes I do. Up until last season Dallas has been smoking the skins for a good while and the hatred for me really started to die after George Allen left. Considering all the things that have taken place in Philly from our players being pelted with snowballs with batteries in them, the bounty bowl, the Philly Crowd cheering an injured Irvin I place Philly as my most hated team in the NFL. I still consider Washington as a very big rival but I can't stand Philly or the philly crowd.

That would be like saying the Giants/Skins rivalry was the most heated because they have Pierce and Arrington there bashing us in the press.

Sure TO gives an added spice to the Dallas/Philly games I would think but the Skins/Cowboys rivalry is tradition.

No they just claim the only reason they lost was because the Giants were emotional about their owner dying.

All it took was the first meaningful Washington since 1997 to bring back all the bitterness. That they actually swept Dallas makes it all the worse.

More than anything though, is how pompous and irritating Washington fans get! They are worse than any other except maybe Steeler fans.

They are so damn irritating. I get my haircut in DC and everytime I walk in to the barber shop I got to hear that crap. Thankfully one of the barbers is Cowboys fan so someone has my back. But they like to pretend the past 10 years didn't exist. Like they were always that good. I like how BP comes out and says it wasn't RW fault, but no matter what they alwasy say it was RW who got burned. Hell RW could have been sitting on the sideline that play and they would still claim he was the one who got burned. I hope to God we smack them in the mouth real good the first game so they shut the hell up. :bang2:

Maybe the best way to put is to state that the Cowboys - Commanders rivalry is THE traditional/historical rvalry in the NFL. Other rivalries come and go, but this one is probably the one with the biggest roots. There are other rivalries in this league (Cincinatti - Cleveland, Oakland-SanDiego) but they have ended due to teams moving or realignment of the league. If you recall, there was talk of moving various teams at league meetings a few years ago, and while some teams did move, nobody would move Washington and Dallas out of the same division. Even when these teams have been lousy, the hope that the rivalry would mean something again has kept these teams fired up to play each other.

Commanders #1 rivalry

The Cowboys - Eagles rivalry is only big to the Eagles fans. For years, it was the Eagles trying to live up to the Cowboys (and the Commanders to a degree). Trying to get over that hump (like the Mavs getting over the Spurs FINALLY).

So to the Eagles, it was the Cowboys, the team to beat. But Dallas never paid no mind to the Eagles, it was the attitude. Oh, them, they are just the Eagles, and go on about their daily business. The Cowboys were looking at the Commanders and Giants more. I think this irratated the Eagles and their fans so much, they made it more than what is was.

Only when Buddy Ryan took over, it became more of a true Rival, or more hatred. But the media will make it out to be more than it is. And they should, they need to get their ratings.

You are correct.

I think I read that at ExtremeImbeciles. After the crooked referee hypothesis though. That is always first.
