The Penn State backs went back for more money than they would get in the NFL.
That's a fact. Ewers should've went back for $6M and Beck went back for $4M. It's definitely professional money, but @rambo2 I'm just wondering what do we call this?

That's stupid to have to take a paycut going to a professional level from an amateur level. They should probably stay where they're at, but I get it.

Shoutout to Samples Groveside standup.
Difference being recruiting. These guys spend much of the year on the road looking to convince HS students to play for their program. Some guys love it, others hate it. Taking a paycut sucks, but it means more time with the family, and if they do well, they're put in line for a professional coordinator job. Just a matter of preference.

He was the Rams RB Coach in 2022 and apparently sucked so bad he got sent right back to college after 1 year.

The other part to it, and a lot of coaches talk about it, is you have to “re-recruit” your own players now with athletes having the ability to transfer.

Was talking to a buddy of mine in Eugene and he commented that Samples referenced wanting to get back to the NFL in part to get beyond the recruiter role and supposedly at one point he had aspirations of being the youngest head coach in the NFL. He said part of this was revealed in an Athlon article I believe. Just relaying what I was fed.

If that’s the case, he’d probably take the pay cut to get to the NFL AND to be close to home.

All the more continued pleased that we are trying to place an experienced pure RB coach ...instead of an asst. OL coach ala Lasko (per McCarthy)

They should at least pay them equal to what they were making.

Of course, maybe we don't want them to make more than the head coach. JK ... maybe.

Don't know much about samples, but he sounds like a solid hire from what I'm gathering. Would prefer Choice, but only because I know how great a motivator he is. It's refreshing to see the team pursue up and comers to the extent that they have this offseason. Didn't even consider how NIL is affecting these position coaches at the college level. Sounds like a headache. Definitely earning their money. Seems reasonable to take a slight paycut to move up to the pros where it's less volatile.

Well worth the risk, when you're young, not so much when you're older and working on your retirement pay grade...lol....been there, on both ends.

Conspiracy theorists could suggest this move was initiated by Del Conte @ UT calling in a favor from Jerry Jones. Samples is an excellent recruiter with ties to many top tier incoming Ducks players. Of course Samples has ties to the state of Texas as well, which along with the So Cal region, is an area in which Oregon has been plundering top tier talent.
Adding to my own conspiracy theory.

Samples’ Dad is the legendary TX high school head coach, Reginald Samples, of the Duncanville Panthers. The same team that had the number 1 rated WR in the country, Dakorien Moore. The same WR that 247 Sports had as a 100% lock for UT but committed to Oregon in early July after being on campus in Eugene in June. Moore was heavily recruited by Junior Adams, but Ra’Shaad Samples helped seal the deal.

You can find info. on the TX AD getting short with interviewers asking him about Sark being plucked for a head coaching gig. Naturally, Jerry was the primary owner being implicated in the potential robbery. I think the two of them have been in contact (This part is my reach). Maybe they got together for a shiatsu, or Cohibas and a sip of 12-year-old PVW, or maybe it was as cold as a phone call between Jerry & Del Conte. Maybe Jerry wanted to clear the air and assure Del Conte the coaching rumors were completely unfounded. Del Conte, being shrewd and still stinging from losing the best receiver in the county, volleyed the idea of Jerry hiring Samples believing that Re’Shaad’s return to the state could be accompanied by Moore’s entrance in the portal in April. After all, Samples is the indirect link for Moore to be in Oregon.

It’s a win-win for the state of Texas. UT gets their coveted receiver back, Oregon loses a recruiter in the fertile grounds of TX, and the Cowboys get a motivated young coach who has aspirations of ascending the coaching ranks of the NFL.

This was written in jest but parts of the story could be validated if both Samples and Moore are in the state of Texas this fall.
