I don't think they are that far away on the DL. If Lawrence pans out, and I think he will, you have Lawrence - Melton - Crawford - ? on passing downs. Brent should be able to be solid enough as a 1 tech moving forward. So maybe we need a strongside end. Really not that far away.

I think corner and LB have to be high priorities moving forward.

They need a reliable linebacking corp that can stay healthy. If Sean Lee, Carter and McClain could stay healthy this would be our strongest position on the team. But they can't.

Every team in the league seems to have warts. There does not seem to be a single dominant team this year. Dallas lost to Wash, SD gets blown out 37-0 by Miami, KC crushes New Eng, Denver gets smoked by Ptt...on and on. It just takes getting hot at the right time.

New England bounced back nicely. lol

I just don't see it this year, Every hit on Tony could be the last. We all now know for sure what that would do.

As we look back over the last 5 years of the Cowboys seasons. As a fan I have blamed Jerry, the Head coach, the players, the trainers, the water boy...etc.
I have run out reason why this team is not winning. At some point as fan I just want to support whatever provides a winning team in the here.

Can you provide a bright future forecast to why this team will be winning playoffs games soon?
I hear ya. It's tough. In many ways we have been the laughing stock of the nfl for some time now. Embarrassing losses, we lose the must win game at end of season. We lose the win and your in game. But I still walk around saying the following, "cowboys every day, no matter what you say" or "same team very year, win or lose, I don't change my team" to opposing teams fans.

They'll make the playoffs this year. I guarantee it.

Whether or not they can actually win a playoff game is anybody's guess.

If they don't win a playoff game I'll consider the season a failure and would hope they can JG.

I would buy the guarantee but our warts are not only showing they are affecting us. Those sloppy games we won during 6 game streak. We ain't winning them anymore. But yes, playoffs are likely. One and done most likely.

I have high hopes for this year.

Until we actually lose and the season is over for us. I am with you.

I think a lot of McClain's problems stem from his football inactivity over the last year and a half. Give him a full offseason, training camp, etc. and I don't think he has these problems.

In general I am positive about the future... Here is why:
  • Roster is younger
  • There almost no goes not pulling their weight. Ie there is no dramatically under-performing or injured players eating up lots of cap right now like last year (Ware, Ratliff, Austin, etc)
  • Really nice drafting recently
  • Team seems to finally have offensive and defensive philosphy
Things I am not positive on:
  • Romo's age and health
  • Current lack of Plan B for future QB direction
  • After they sign Dez, to many mega contracts of the offensive side of the ball -- Romo, Tyron, and Dez will all be on $100m+ deals.

Two weeks ago they were legitimately considered a top-3 team. They lost to Washington, a heated divisional rival in a game that the Cowboys should have won. And then they lost to the Cardinal and made it competitive with Brandon Weeden at QB. Of course, when the Cowboys lose 2 in a row it's a catastrophe.

I generally like the direction the team is headed outside of having to replace Romo soon.

I think Marinelli/Kiffin and the rest of the defensive coaches are doing a heckuva job. We also are seeing a tremendous job done by Callahan on the O-Line and I think Derek Dooley is doing a good job with the WR's (need a QB to deliver them the ball).

I think we can unload Claiborne's contract and Carr's contract because between the coaching and the scheme, they aren't worth that money and we can replace them with Scandrick, Moore and Patmon along with a draft pick. But, they don't have to pick a corner high in the draft to fulfill those needs. This allows us to stockpile talent instead of having to spend large money just so we can fill a major hole. And now we have Melton, T. McClain and Crawford all playing well at DT.

So our needs are becoming less major in size and that provides the team with more talent and flexibility to acquire more talent. The issue is that it is coming at the tail end of Romo's career.

Future looks pretty bright, if you ask me. People are overreacting over the past two weeks. Every good team loses eventually (loss to Skins after winning 6 straight). And almost any team would lose to a 6-1 team with their starting QB out (loss to Cards, second straight loss). So cool down, people.

Now, as far as our future goes. It looks pretty bright... It'll be hard to keep all these guys, but look at all the young talent we have:

OFFENSE

QB - big need. Romo is great but no future prospects.

RB - Murray, Dunbar, Randle (?), Williams... Murray is great and only 26. Backups are decent. Randle may have worked his way off the team. Might not be able to keep Murray. But RB is such an easy position to fill.

TE - Witten still has a few years in him. I think he'd play for almost nothing if it means staying in Dallas. He seems pretty loyal. We'll see. But I trust that Escobar will fill in nicely. Guy looks legit.

WR - Easily a strong spot. Dez, Williams, Beasley, Harris (?), Street. Now, if Dez doesn't resign, it'll become an area of need. But I think he will.

OL - The brightest positional corps for future for any team in the NFL. Smith, Leary, Fred, Martin. That's insane. RT will eventually become a need, but 4 out of 5 Pro Bowlers aint too bad.

DEFENSE

DT - I'm really liking the future of the 3-tech position. Melton has looked great. Crawford looks like a beast. They can be a nasty duo for the future. If Melton doesn't resign, Crawford will start and we'll need someone to spell him. Maybe Coleman. Also, 1-tech isn't a huge position for Marinelli, but we definitely need to get a stud big man. We'll see what Brent can do. Either way, 1-tech should be easy to fill in the mid-rounds of the draft (or free agency).

DE - Lawrence is back. We'll see how he does. Pretty much no one besides him. I wouldn't be against the idea of Crawford moving back to SDE considering we have no other DEs and how well Melton has looked. I want our best guys on the field. Selvie looks useless and Spencer is likely done. DE is a huge area of need.

LB - At the moment, it seems like we have more guys than we know what to do with. McClain and Lee could play MLB. Lee will probably play WLB since I see us keeping McClain. But Durant is a natural WLB. And Hitchens seems to be too. Then you have Carter who looks good at SLB. All these guys won't be here next year. But we have a lot of young guys to work with. I consider LB a strength.

CB - Not so sure. I like Scandrick. And Moore looks decent. He's been off the past few weeks but he's a good 3rd corner. We really need a 2nd and 4th corner (considering Scandrick is our 1st and Moore our 3nd). I think Claiborne has another year on his contract. I don't see him sticking around long-term, unless he becomes Revis somehow. Carr should be gone. Doesn't warrant the contract. CB is a position of need, but I don't want to see us investing heavily into CB. We did in the past and it didn't do much for us. You need to invest heavily in the trenches and the guys behind them will look good. Look what it did when we addressed our O-line.

S - Church is starting to become a target. And Wilcox is improving. People have been saying Church and Wilcox are too similar. We need safeties who aren't liabilities in coverage. I see Wilcox making Church expendable. We need a beast FS. I wouldn't mind seeing what one of our corners can do at safety (maybe Claiborne). Coverage is very important at the safety position in the current NFL. I think FS is a big area of need.

Overall, I think our biggest areas of need are QB, FS and DE (both sides). We can get corners, 1-techs and backups in the mid to late rounds. But we have a lot of good young talent. Offense is stacked with young potential, but it's all useless when you don't have a QB. Defense has some good young players but there are a lot of holes. I do think we're stacked at LB though. But we won't be able to keep everyone.

There has been one constant with this team............Jerry Jones. That said he was also a huge part of the Championships. So whats the solution? Who the heck knows :-/

The wheels should be turning right now as to how we are going to go about finding our next QB.

I hope somebody, whether it is in the coaching ranks, scouts, GM, upper management, .. whoever, ... somebody needs to find our next QB.

I agree but being on the road for the majority of Nov/Dec is not going to be an easy task.

I suppose, but unless the team finds a way to keep Romo upright and reasonably healthy, it's going to be real ugly regardless of where we play...
