Same way they got an elite franchise QB using a comp draft pick at 135.

Defensive line ties with running backs and wide receivers for the lowest first round success rate at 58% over the timeline 2004-2014.

The success rates are as follows: 1st - 58%, 2nd - 26%, 3rd - 27%, 4th - 37%, 5th - 13%, 6th - 13%, 7th - 3%

On average, 8 linemen are taken in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd, 6 in the 3rd and 4th, 5 in the fifth and sixth and 9 in the 7th.

I don't know what the stats are for just DEs; the above is all DL drafted over that time.

Bill Polian was on the radio earlier this season and talked about Indianapolis assembled their defensive personnel during the Manning era. Most people often looked at those Colts defenses and viewed them as soft -- as the weakness of those Indy teams. And they most certainly were. After all, all the money was invested on the other side of the ball.

But Polian said because of their high-powered offense, they built a defense that could play from ahead on the scoreboard, valuing smaller, faster players.

Our situation isn't a mirror comparison by any stretch, but our personnel isn't going to change overnight. We've got to make the most of what is here. Internally I think the concession has been made that we won't be winning games because of our defense. It's got to function as a complementary unit to our offense.

I think you'll continue to see us do exactly what we have been doing: try to hold strong against the run; force teams to drive the length of the field, hoping we can hold tight in the red zone and force field goals; and bludgeon the opposition with our offense.

Is it good enough to win a Super Bowl? Maybe not, but I think it's the best we can do for the time being.

Complain about the D if you want. But they have been the better defense in 10 of their games this year so far. I'll take it. They don't have to be good. Just opportunistic.

The Cowboys would not have 10 wins without Brown. They are incredibly lucky that he has been so good as a rookie.

The pass rush is going to be a big problem at some point. I don't think they even sacked the Washington QB.

Marinelli might as well just rush 2 and drop everybody in coverage on passing downs.

Yes I agree. He has played exceptionally well for a rookie and better than an average starter regardless of years of service

I feel jaylon comes back I think we can stand pat at LB this offseason. Same at DT. I would try to bring back McClain on a cheap deal and move T Craw back inside. That would set the tackle rotation. End is a dumpster fire. DLaw is the best of the bunch and is an average player at best (he was awful yesterday). 2-3 new bodies need to be added to the end rotation .

The secondary is a hot mess too. I would let Carr and church walk and try being back mo and wilcox on the cheap. MO's injury history is going to drive his price way way down. Then you need at least 3 new members for the secondary.

Bottom line, a TON of resources needs to be devoted to the D. Assuming we see cap savings from Romo leaving I would immediately extend Martin and then put every other penny into the defense

Actually the secondary has been surprisingly good this year. I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to cast any of the DBs off if we can keep them around on reasonable deals. These guys are vastly improved over prior years. Coaching has to have something to do with it.

Interesting that 4th is pretty far ahead of a 2nd and a 3rd. What is the definition of success? I'd be ok with an all defense draft next year. Sign Leary and roll with Collins/Green at RT, sign one of the Williams/Butler duo, and stand pat on the rest of the O.

Generally success is >50% of snaps but I don't recall their definition. Not hard to find a plethora of articles re the topic.

What a lot of people seem to be forgetting is the improvement of players after a year of experience. This is especially true of rookies.

This is Collin's rookie year as well as Tapper and the veterans willl have a year together next season. Just like offensive lines the D-line improves with familiarity. Dont rule out free agents next year, although don't expect a big contract. The Cowboys don't need one necause when you are an emerging dominant team, veterans will sign to a discount to get a shot at a Super Bowl.

I was thinking about the vet wanting to play in Dallas knowing they have an elite offense and no defense. Might make sense we could get a deal on someone looking for a shot at a ring.

Now that's a good line of thought. There will be DLine FA's next year who would see Dallas as a VERY attractive landing spot. Picture a guy who's been stuck on a team like the Jaguars or the Browns or the Jets, teams that have stockpiled high D draft picks the last few years, and their rookie contracts are up.

And if they get Romo off the Roster they'll have even more money available for defensive help.
