Its really the only defensive stat that matters.

Dallas is the 6th best team in the NFL when it comes to not allowing the opposition to score at 19.4 points allowed per game. Seattle leads this stat by only allowing 17 points per game.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total/sort/totalPoints/position/defense

So you can say Dallas has no shot because of their defense but our defense is one of the best at not allowing points to be scored on them.

The way the Cowboys offense is built is why you can't judge our team like the 31 other NFL teams.. We just have a different recipe for winning than they do.

It's ball control... It's an explosive run game that teams are selling out to stop and in turn getting burned by Dak while we chew the clock.
But it's not - it's Def Pass Rating and it's been discussed over and over and its THE most important stat to winning or losing teams in the NFL.

Percy can explain better than I can but teams can actually be bad at Points Allowed and still win but teams who are bad at Def Pass Rating are bad and that trend has never been broken. I made a post yesterday about the bottom six teams in the league last year and the best six teams and the best were the best and the worst were the worst at DPR.

I'm not saying we cannot do it in a three-game playoff run but no team has been able to overcome it - yet. But please - forget points allowed.

Turnovers usually come in bunches and even out as the season progresses.
Guaranteed that if Wilcox keeps bringing the hammer some receivers are going to cough up a few

Even if Claiborne returns our lack of a pass rush is something to be concerned about. We just have to hope Dak and Zeke stay healthy and we don't hit any bumps offensively later in the season that could expose our defense. The team I fear most is Atlanta.
Good points. Atlanta can score easily on peeps

I hear what you are saying, but the draft didn't fall that way for us, so we took a calculated risk. If Jaylon is healthy next year, and returns to form, it will likely have been a good risk.

Spence was available when we drafted, but apparently he had his own set of issues causing us to pass on him. All players carry some degree of risk/reward. You just have to make the best decision you can based on the circumstances and go with what you think is the best balance of risk and reward.

I mentioned the draft didn't fall for us with our first pick for a defensive player but there was plenty of opportunity with with the 34th over all pick and we gambled it on an injured player who hasn't played a down for us and may may never play for us. We threw away a #2 last season on a pothead so these calculated risks haven't been working out.

We've made smart, safe decisions with our first picks which is why our offense is so good. The best decision is to draft healthy, good character players that you can count on. It's easy to see why our defense lags so far behind our offense.

Guess statistics really can be used to prove whatever point you want them to

One of Washington's TDs was because of a rookie mistake (Brown) and the other was a team playing with a two score lead. The goal on Washington's last possession was not to keep them from scoring, but to make them use a lot of time doing it. And, that strategy worked out fine. A win is a win. When you have a ball control offense, the clock is your friend on defense.

We have to learn to play better with a two score lead or it's going to get us beat. We were trying to keep them from scoring on their last possession because it would have gotten them within 5 points which is what happened, giving them the opportunity at an onside kick. Had they recovered that kick they would have had a 1:53 left to beat us. Our strategy needs to be to go for the kill and not give the opponent the opportunity to pull the rug out from under us in closing seconds. Our defense has to step up in the 4th quarter and keep opponents out of the endzone with games on the line or it will catch up with us.

I think we can beat any of these teams. Even with our defense.
Atlanta is the one team that might just outscore us.
We would need long drives for td's and good def effort to beat them.
Their defense is not very good either.

No question. If the Cowboys offense hits a skid for whatever reason, the defense will not be able to hold and win a game for us. They weren't able to do it last year either. Or the year before.

At some point you would think the offense is going to have a bad game where things just don't go their way. But, they keep answering the bell and scoring 30+ a game.

If that keeps up, I like our chances.

Eventually that's going to happen, it happens to all offenses eventually even some of the greatest offenses. Dak is going to have a bad game where he throws a couple of picks, takes a few sacks and things simply aren't going our way and we're going to need to make a few plays on defense to win a game like that. You can't just keep putting it on your offense and rookie QB every week or it will cost us at some point, it's inevitable.

A lot of defenses cant hold with the game on the line though. Even the good ones.

Disagree. I think we're a bad match-up for them.
I don't know.

The Bucs front 4 essentially beat down their o-line physically, rendering their entire offense useless. That's how they won.

This front 4 can't do that. Not even close. We have other strengths, but the blueprint Tampa used yesterday is beyond our capability. Our d-line stinks at pressuring QB's consistently for an entire game.

One thing is for sure, I don't want the Cowboys to go up there to play them.

On a good day, we can beat anybody. But room for error is very small. Give up a couple of turnovers to a strong offense like Wash. or Atlanta, and this defense is in for a long day.

No one concerns me like Atlanta. Ryan is having a great year and Julio Jones has over 1000 yards. With our lack of a pass rush we would never be able to contain the Ryan to Jones connection. Ryan put up over 500 yards on Carolina's defense. If there's one team I don't want to see in the playoffs it's Atlanta.

Eventually passing yards will lead to points, we saw that on Washington's last three drives where they scored 3 TD's. Although we stopped them early in the game we couldn't stop them when the game was on the line and it was our offense moving the chains at the end that saved us. Had Washington got the ball back they probably would have scored a TD to beat us in the finale moments. The last 3 weeks we certainly don't rank 6th in points allowed. That number has been going us because we were 4th prior to playing Pittsburgh. Our pass coverage has been showing serious cracks the past few weeks which is why we're ranked 30th against the pass.

Eventually? When? Because it hasn't to this point.

Where is the Aaron Rodgers this year?

What QB has the skills to really throw all over us and score TDs instead of FG's?
Atlanta and New England for starters. Also better hope New Orleans can't find a way in.

The Giants btw usually beat us when we fail to get QB pressure minus some Romo heroics.
