did you hit the F or T link to see what they allow to be shared? it's the headline and maybe a lead in sentence. there is no real standard here or any newsgroup i know of to say to do the same. some people put in a paragraph, some include more - much more at times.

i understand their move. i just think they had much better ones available to them.
I get that, I just know there were mods reminding folks to keep it brief.

I propose that the Cowboys Zone OFFICIALLY boycott DMN and urge all Cowboy fans to do the same. The arrogance and stupidity exhibited both by the DMN and their editor who comes here basically trying to claim nothing really happened needs a solid response.

their editor has an account...

Yeah, but I kinda feel bad for the editor guy. His law firm sends a C&D with instructions that differ from what he says he actually wants their policy to be. What they ended up doing is alienating a few thousand local Cowboys fans who also happen to be consumers of their stories (we're online, we love the Cowboys). People are creatures of habit. They go to sites like this one where the stories are aggregated and where they can talk about all of them in a moderated social context. It's a lot harder to get them to visit a site organically when there are plenty of other options to choose from that are simply linked.

Sites like CZ provide readers, moderation, and a selection of topics that's hard to maintain individually. In other words, we offered maybe as much of a service to their content (in terms of the social incentive to visit their site, read, and discuss the articles) as their content offered our members (in terms of their unique access). It's supposed to be a symbiotic relationship.

So I kind of feel like the editor guy already got forked in this deal. What they asked for, and what he wanted, aren't the same things at all. That said, I did come all this way, and I did bother to get my pitchfork out...

If DMN is using social media to promote its stories and within those posts they allow a portion of the story to be shared - they are giving others the right to share that content.

For instance, if on Facebook they post the link to a story, along with a headline and lead, then they are allowing anyone else on facebook to "share" that content as well. I believe it's in the Facebook user agreement as such. I know Twitter has it in its user agreement.

That opens the door for public sharing of content with proper due credit.

I'm not saying the whole story gets to be shared, but CZ has always told folks not to republish the whole story so that shouldn't have been an issue. So there could be contention as to how much is too much, I suppose. But that wasn't the issue here if I recall correctly, since the D&C said all content.
Thanks for the explanation. I think it boils down to who DMN allows to use its information. It is not obligated to restrict everyone. For some reason it has targeted this site. I don't understand it and don't like it, but it's well within their right.
I suspect it won't last long. The DMN will see the error of its way and change. To my knowledge this forum is not a for-profit enterprise.

Great post. The lawyers likely made the decision because they're trying to protect their intellectual property and hoping it drives CZoners to their site.
But I only visit DMN because of this site. Now that its links and content are restricted, there's really no reason to visit because I don't want to wade through the site to find Cowboys info. Besides, there are simply too many other sources (including those on this site) to get Cowboys info.

i highly doubt their attorney wrote a cease and desist letter without DMN approval.
furthermore, almost any lawyer would suggest to work things out amicably before even a nasty-gram.

Finally, as others have mentioned, this is their way to a quick death.
CZ brings them how many clicks and subscriptions?

Per Quantcast, the DMN is the 815th most trafficked site in the country with 2,163,338 "people in the United States who visit each site within a month."

https://www.quantcast.com/top-sites/US?jump-to=815

CZ.com is ranked 82,338th with 23,171 visitors per month. Even if all zoners would stop going to the DMN, the DMN wouldn't even notice the 1% reduction in traffic.

For reference, here are a few other local sites with Cowboys content:

No. 556: nbcdfw.com. 3,124,500 visitors/month
No. 826: star-telegram.com. 2,126,462 visitors/month
No. 2,092: bloggingtheboys.com. 914,980 visitors/month
No. 2,953: dallascowboys.com. 638,091 visitors/month
No. 17,424: expressnews.com. 106,185 visitors/month
No. 72,301: insidethestar.com. 26,308 visitors/month
No. 77,831: 5pointsblue.com. 24,486 visitors/month
No. 324,199: cowboyszone.com. 6,163 visitors/month

silly question.
is the >2 million per month visitors for the cowboys content or for all of sports or for all their content?
if you want to make a relevant point, lets compare apples to apples.
