Dallas restructures Tyron to league minimum

Yeah, that's true, but the team doesn't want to actually have to cut Carr. If they used all their money on hypothetical blue chip free agents, that would tip their hand and Carr's agent wouldn't have to budge as much on a pay cut if he thought there was a team interested in paying him more later in free agency. It's in the team's advantage to not rely on cutting Carr to fund the draft.

Also, the savings for cutting Carr this year are minimal over the span of five years, which is what the team generally uses to manage the cap, so you're still at a net loss after factoring in his replacement, even if it gives you relief for a brief window in the summer of 2015.

Regardless if they cut Carr or give him a paycut. They don't have to worry about the rookie pool money part because that will take care of it.

Oh, I'm with you on the Dez thing. I just disagree about being able to hypothetically sign those three guys without making some drastic moves. Even if we were to assume that Suh's first year salary is the veteran minimum, his bonus money must be disgusting to get to that number.

Yeah there was some hyperbole in my comment but we're in a good spot cap wise. Dez longterm or not.

Sure, but but that money isn't going to help in free agency, and if the team spends its rookie pool money there, that tips their hand in negotiations. I'm sure they'd rather agree on a salary reduction now and not later like with the Doug Free situation. This is one of those situations where the cap undoubtedly matters.

That said, I'm almost wondering if by not tendering Moore (and saving $1.5M), they're eyeing a Mincey-type player at CB that could be a marginal starter to pair with Scandrick as a negotiating ploy to get Carr to take a pay cut. If Carr's agent knows the team isn't desperate for a starting caliber player, he's more likely to agree to the team's demands. Best case scenario, Dallas would have a solid 3rd corner to play on the outside in nickel situations with Scandrick playing the slot, and worst case, Carr becomes a cap casualty and the team still has two starters under contract to pair with Claiborne and probably a draft pick.

I don't know what Fish is talking about. If the team tendered Dunbar and Jones, then they're $2.7 million OVER the cap. The contract was written for this specific purpose. It's a done deal.

Not quite sure what you don't understand

I'd lose all faith in our FO

Well with the cap increasing every year, adding an additional 1.5 M on top of our current offer won't hurt us. Give him a 3-4 year contract and watch the cap inflate every year along with it 5M + . Not as big of a deal when the cap keeps increasing per year.

I don't understand why Fisher needs to clarify something that is either done or as good as done. It's Sunday. If it isn't official yet, it will be tomorrow.

Why does that bother you? If it isn't done as of now, he wants to make sure people know that...

I just don't think that it's going to affect anyone's sleep on Sunday night if it's something that's as good as done tomorrow morning. It has to be done before Tuesday, so it's not like it isn't going to happen in the next 12 hours or so. To me, this ranks below correcting someone on the proper usage of "your" versus "you're" as far as importance goes.

Seems like something silly to waste your time worrying about...

I mean, I'm not going to have trouble sleeping tonight or anything. I just think it's a little silly to say that a built-in contractual mechanism to free up $8 million in cap space when you're close to $3 million OVER the cap is a "smart option," just in case, and nothing more, because that's what Fisher was saying. Wouldn't you agree?

The same built in mechanism is in Romos contract...I hope they don't use his

I was in the same camp originally, but without being able to sign Dez to a long term deal, I don't think they have much of a choice anymore if they want to lock up starters at RB, LB, 1DT, SDE, KR, and FB(?) before the draft.

I'm not a salary cap aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, that's why I rely on the knowledge of others. overthecap.com has us with around $300K in cap space left and to me it appears the Dunbar & Jones tenders are included. So in my head if they pull the trigger on Smith it's not because they HAVE to have the money to get under the cap. I understand we probably need it to just be safe for rookie contracts and/or other free agents. But I see some saying we are almost 3 mil over the cap. What am I missing?

Can probably free up enough money to spend cheaply on a few of those and leave Romos deal alone

Where are you getting this $3M OVER number from? According to Over the Cap's latest tally, Dallas has $311K in cap room with Dunbar and Jones' tenders INCLUDED. Once they restructure Tyron, they'll have $8.5M. They still have a couple more options to create WELL OVER $20M in cap room.

Yeah, I think you're right. Before, Over the Cap had updated the salary cap figure but hadn't included Dunbar and Jones in the table that includes the roster (as of right now, they still appear twice in the free agents column on the calculator page, so that still needs to be updated, too). That's what I was going off of ($312K minus two RFA tenders). I'm not sure if the current cap figure includes them or not. Maybe it does.
