One Emmitt in all those picks. Better than the lottery but long odds. What's the failure rate picking RBs in the first?

Exactly right. The position is risky in the first round, good/great backs can be picked up a round or two later.

I can't say I would be surprised about a pass rusher if one is available, but I'm thinking Lber is a close 3rd to RB and Corner.

actually I don't think LB is that high a priority - the starters are set and realisticaly going in the first couple of rounds for a LB would not be logical.

You can never have enough pass rushers but by the time we pick the real good ones are gone.

So frankly I am more and more leaning towards them targeting a CB in round 1.

1973. OJ Simpson ran for 2003 yards on 332 attempts. He was 26 years old. He was drafted by the pathetic Buffalo Bills in 1969.

Darren McFadden just completed his 7th season in the NFL and just age 27. He has amassed just over 1000 rushing attempts and 4200 career yards. He too, like Simpson, has invested in early years of his career with a pathetic team in Oakland

In the next 2 years, I predict that Darren McFadden, like Simpson, will carry the ball nearly 300 attempts and 1500 yards in 2015 and 2016.

I don't think its good for a team to think like that though. If the value is good and you have a player ranked high enough sometimes its smart to trade up. Especially at the tail end of the 1st. This team is not so talent devoid it has to stay put. They could always drop down out of the 2nd to recoup a pick. I think going into the draft being inflexible is a mistake.

our record at trading up is NOT good. Mo Claiborne just being the most notorious example.

I despise simpson the person but as a football player he was one of the top 5 of all time. I watched that game in 1973 when he went over 2000. EVERYONE in the galaxy knew who was getting the ball and it did not matter. McFadden cannot carry Simpsons jock as a player. His yds per game that season is a record no one has ever come close to.

I too sw that game in 1973 and many more. If McFadden as a football player compares to any historical player - it is Simpson. McFadden was cursed to play in OAK. McFadden will post 1500 yards in DAL and I will not be shocked. I will not be shocked if he runs for 2100 yards in DAL or a combined 2500 yards. Like To McClain said"we are going to take the world." Don't be shock when DMC runs for 1500+

Be my guess. Flowers, Clarke, Smith, Edwards, Gregory, and Dupree at DE altho Edwards will be a SDE and Nickel DT. Some won't be available. CB seems more likely.

you really have no football judgement if you claim McFadden is anywhere near as good as Simpson.

our record at trading up is NOT good. Mo Claiborne just being the most notorious example.

Claiborne was an anomaly and a failure from the old way of doing things. They didn't spend much time on him pre draft, with no visits and I would bet little discussion or background checking into the actual player. To be fair Claiborne was almost unanimously regarded as the top defensive player in the draft and they didn't do the homework in case he was somehow available. CBs are hard to evaluate. Just look to the past 3-4 years at how many 1st Rd CBs have busted.

There is also the Dez Bryant and Emmitt Smith trade ups. A highly regarded prospect who was in reach and needed a slight trade up. That worked out well. Trading back can be just as risky. See the Stephen Jackson debacle and the special teams draft.

The draft is a crap shoot either way. Trust the board, evaluate prospects as best as possible and act accordingly. If the FO has a top 10 player at a position of need within reach, go get him. If they don't have a highly regarded guy at their pick, trade back. The draft is fluid and teams that are more adaptable to the situations as they come usually perform better.

Anything can happen, but I really prefer the smaller, more natural RBs like Emmitt rather than the 6' bruisers.

I like Ameer Abdullah and Duke Johnson in the draft on day two.

Draft is inherently risky. You can say about about almost any position. The bust rate is probably highest in DE given such high demand but short supply.

It's comes down to your scouting. You have to trust it and not fall into what is trendy now. Think Fredrick....Dallas was crucified for the pick but look who's laughing now.

If people knew which backs were going to have success in the NFL, they would all be drafted in round 1 or 2.

Yea I hope we don't go the LB route. McClain is a great MLB. Lee and Hitchens can play MLB and WLB. Hitchens also might end up paying SLB. And we have three guys we just signed. I really hope we don't look at LB until after we've picked DT, CB/FS and RB.

There are going to be some surprises as there always is. You can get stuck at a pick and you HAVE to turn a name in. If there isn't a player at a PON then you take the BPA in a tier. That leads to what the heck picks no one can understand.

Exactly. If Adrian Peterson was a Cowby at 27 and was set to be a Fa, do people really think the Cowboys would have just walked away?

In all fairness, I do t think Gurley is nearly the prospect that Peterson was coming out.
It sounds like like some here do though...which is fine. I think they may be underselling Peterson at age 21 though.

Yes, when possible lean towards the expensive positions like pass rusher and CB over 4-3 LBs and RBs.

Exactly. People keep pointing to the RBs drafted outside of the 1st who turned out good, but what about the other multiple 2nd, 3rd and 4th Rd RBs that busted? Drafting is an incredibly difficult thing to do well. Out of the 230 players picked, how many actually stick?

There are going to be some surprises as there always is. You can get stuck at a pick and you HAVE to turn a name in. If there isn't a player at a PON then you take the BPA in a tier. That leads to what the heck picks no one can understand.

Thats why I want a flexible draft plan. Come in with a good game plan, but be ready to adjust on the fly.

That was just in reference to the other post. People are assuming since they let Murray go, they would let any RB go and I simply dont believe that. If AP or a truly elite RB(I dont think Murray is) was here, they would have kept him imo.

I do think Gurley is the best RB prospect since AP, but I don't think he is the same talent AP was coming out either. I think his upside is a Lynch/Stephen Jackson hybrid.

Hey, where have you man, man. AWOL! :)

Hey bud, it has been too long! I've lurked, just haven't really posted. :D

I used to spend all my free time here, but I now spend a lot of time on an OKC Thunder forum. Still lurking though and now that the Thunder's season is about to be over (ugh those blasted injuries to KD and Ibaka!), I'll probably post here more often again!

It is wisest for the Cowboys to draft BPA since they have no real pressing need, with emphasis on a CB prospect before too late.

Jay Ajayi is a bust in the making.

Lots of different opinions... I still think it's going to be CB in the 1st... The team thinks it got RB, DE,DT and LB covered... Jerry is stewing right now because Carr won't take a paycut... Clay-bust is hurt...
