they drafted him to upgrade a very weak part of the special teams, and he's been exceptional

its not that he CANT kick fg's...he did it at USC...just not that accurate

I know, I just can't believe that there weren't other "kickoff specialists" out there to be had that didn't require anything higher than a 7th round pick.

IF you draft a kicker, then he should be able to do both jobs - kickoff and make a high % of FG's.

He doesn't just kickoff... the guy actually plays special teams and makes tackles.

The thought he was a waste in r5 is insane. We drafted Jacob Rogers in round 2. That is a waste.

good points jterrell: but Suisham missed a 23 yarder...just like Folk's short miss....and the man cost them two games against us and the saints...the guy is just: undependable for sure. Elam is probably done, but I think the reason they want to look at Suisham is because he's use to kicking at Fed Ex field. There is something to be said for familiarity I suppose....so maybe he doesn't SUCK but he wouldn't be my first option

Mike Nugent or Bill Gramatica

Nugent is 3 of 7 this year and was AWFUL in Tampa failing to make ANY kick over 40 yards.

Bill Gramatica hasn't been in the NFL for like 5 years so perhaps this one (or both) was shtick.

Just saw that Colombo is ready for some on-field work. Despite that fact, I would put him on IR to open up a roster spot, then sign Suisham (or somebody) while keeping Folk on the roster for the time being -- on the assumption that he will come around eventually.

I'd just hate to lose him and have the Skins pick him up, to kick against the Cowboys for the next 10 years.

I hear ya on the short miss and big spot.
Problem is every Shuisam kick was big because Washington was scoring about 15 points per game until the past month.

18 of 21 is very solid any way it goes.

If you can get a guy hitting that high a percentage this late in the season it is a miracle.

Is it ideal to bring in a guy who missed two kicks on the home field? Of course not but he's replacing a guy who couldn't make warm up kicks right now.

folk would likely be IR'd himself.

there is zero chance we IR Columbo who is a very good OT.

we'd probably IR Curtis Johnson first. He has been banged up all year.

Ha! RE: the pre-game kicks... I actually thought that was Buehler. I was at a bar and said, "Well, he kicked more PATs than FGs at SoCal!" Then, they told me it was actually Folk warming up.

I think Suisham can provide what we are looking for. No kicker is perfect. See the recent attempts by Brown, Feely, and Scobee. Even Mason Crosby is only at 73%

Professional career
Indianapolis Colts
He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2005 NFL Draft, and served as the kickoff specialist for the Colts. Rayner was released by the Colts on April 3, 2006.

Green Bay Packers
Rayner was then signed by the Green Bay Packers on April 6, 2006. After Billy Cundiff was released, Rayner became the Packers' full-time kicker for the 2006 season.

It has been noted that Rayner has one of the stronger legs amongst NFL placekickers. During the 2006 season, he kicked a 54-yard field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles, tying the longest field goal in Packers' history (Ryan Longwell and Chris Jacke also have made 54-yard field goals). He also made a 55-yard field goal two weeks later against the Miami Dolphins; however, it was called back due to a defensive penalty that occurred before the snap, nullifying the play.

On September 1, 2007, the Packers released him in favor of highly-touted rookie Mason Crosby.

Kansas City Chiefs
Nine days later, Rayner was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs to replace struggling rookie kicker Justin Medlock. After beginning the 2007 season with 13 field goals made in his first 16 attempts, he was released on November 26 after missing a fourth quarter attempt against rival Oakland. Rayner's inability to consistently make short field goals, with three misses from under 40 yards, was the primary reason for his departure from the Chiefs. He was replaced by veteran kicker John Carney.

San Diego Chargers
After being released from the Chiefs, Rayner signed a contract with the San Diego Chargers after full-time kicker Nate Kaeding was injured while making a tackle on a kickoff. With the Chargers, Rayner served as the kickoff specialist for the last two games of the regular season as well as the 2007-2008 playoffs.

Miami Dolphins
On March 11, 2008, Rayner was signed by the Miami Dolphins. However, he was released on June 6 before training camp.

Detroit Lions
Rayner was signed by the Detroit Lions on August 9, 2008 after the team waived punter Eddie Johnson to perform kicking duties during some pre-season games while kicker Jason Hanson was nursing an injury. He was once again released on August 26, 2008, as Hanson had recovered from his injury. He was 6 for 7 with the Lions during the pre-season.

Cincinnati Bengals
Rayner was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals on October 11 while placekicker Shayne Graham nursed a groin injury. The team waived fullback Reagan Mauia to make room for Rayner. The Bengals released Rayner on October 21, as Graham had recovered from his groin injury. Rayner was 1-for-1 on field goals and 2-for-2 during his stint with Cincinnati.

Washington Commanders
Rayner was signed by the Washington Commanders on February 3, 2009. He was released on September 5, 2009.
What the heck is Rayner trying to do, become the first guy to kick for all 32 teams?
8 of the 32 already (25%). 24 to go........ :laugh2:

At church yesterday, of course this area back the Saints and several were congrats to the Boys via me, but guess they weren't aware of the Folk controversy. One guy that was at the game thought Folk was just messing around with the warmup. When I told him there was a problem he said...oh, guess they didn't have a clue. He then said, Jones better do something, it didn't look good. I told him that the replay on NFL network show several kicks and ask him how many he kicked. He said he kicked quite a few. I don't know if he meant those few that showed up on NFL Network or twice that many. I'm guessing the latter. Needless to say, he was a little shocked finding out what was going on.

You can't just IR someone who isn't seriously injured, and it would be ridiculous to try to claim Folk is "injured" just because he's missing kicks. (Though IR would be the best of all possible results.)

And Curtis Johnson has been active the last 3 weeks and playing ST I believe. He had the hamstring problem early in the season and then was inactive a lot, but with Watkins out, he's been on ST.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Kickers on their way
12:40 PM Mon, Dec 21, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Todd Archer/Reporter Bio | E-mail | News tips

The Cowboys will work out kickers today, but Wade Phillips and Stephen Jones would not divulge who would be at Valley Ranch.

"It does us no good to say what we're doing," Jones said.

His point being if another team needing a kicker sees who the Cowboys are bringing in, then they could get trumped. I understand that, but no other team is in worse shape than the Cowboys when it comes to kicking, especially a team that is in the playoff chase.

But Shaun Suisham is scheduled to be in town, depending on the weather in Washington D.C., and possibly Steven Hauschka, who started the year in Baltimore. He was 9-of-13 before his release by the Ravens.

Suisham was 18-of-21 for Washington before he was cut by the Commanders for his 23-yard miss at New Orleans two weeks ago. He also had two misses against the Cowboys that allowed Dallas to rally for a 7-6 win.

"It's been kind of a mystern to us," coach Wade Phillips said when asked why the Cowboys didn't work out kickers last week. "We've tried to work it out in a lot of different ways. We obviously went with a different holder. We tried a kicking competition. Now it comes to this point."

Phillips said Folk would not take part in any competition the Cowboys would have today. When asked if Folk could save his job Phillips said, "We're going to bring in some kickers today then we'll make our decision later on as to what we're going to do."
