Damien Wilson to start at SAM LB

Wilson has been coming on in practice according to the Dallas coaching staff. They're privy to see those on a daily basis where we aren't. If they see something in him like improved consistency at Sam, then it's likely a good time to see what he can do before the season's over. That way, the team will know how to approach the 2017 draft with a good idea as to what they have at SLB. He's sure to be dutifully observed and acted upon.

Agreed.

At this point I can see these as "need" draft picks come next April based on free agent exits, guys getting cut and out-right roster weakness as of now:

DE
CB
OT
OG
WR
LB
S

If LB could be kept off that list then great.

It'd be great if we could hit upon all of those positions in one way or another.

I called this in a previous thread that Wilson was playing well. I'm not surprised he's getting the nod at SAM. When he's in, he's always around the ball. Hopefully he continues. And just think....this guy missed a significant of training camp because of a non-football related injury. He could be better with a training camp.

Then go LB in free agency? Or is it implicit in your post that Smith is ready to go, Mike? We need a splash signing in FA and to draft heavy D. This close, we need to be players in free agency, and if that means forgoing LB and going strong DL (DE) in draft and go after LB on the market, (or vice versa), then I'm game.

We need to re-sign Mo, Carr, and Church as well. (Sorry for taking the OP slightly off-course)

This is good news. Gives him half the season to prove wether or not he can be a starter in this league. If he can, it would sure change how I feel about drafting a LB early next year and how the Cowboys can approach FA/draft in the off season.

Wonder what LB's are considered the 32d best player in the 2017 draft. But I guess we could trade up somehow. Like our 2nd round, #64 overall. As we seem to waste 2nd round picks. :D

True.

If Smith & Lee were out there as two linebackers we'd very possibly think that's a very good combo.
If Smith comes back healthy in 2017 and Wilson proves to be a solid run defender, our LB could be very solid. Wilson has the athleticism to develope in coverage and back up both the more important Mike and Will spots

If JSmith comes back that is a top unit...whoever plays SAM......if Wilson continues to improve then maybe elite
