Maher is <50% last two games. He hasn't played in a couple of years and couldn't make 70% of his kicks when he did.
Over a random who couldn’t make or stay on a team this season? Absolutely.Last season playoffs vs Niners - Dak trying to clock the ball for a last-second FG attempt, and ran out of time.
Let’s say Dak in similar situation is actually able to secure a last-second FG attempt…. You’re saying you want Maher attempting that kick?!?
Say what you want - there is nothing RANDOM about Brett Maher. Dude missed 5 of his last 6 PAT attempts. But, in your world, I’M BEING ILLOGICAL?Over a random who couldn’t make or stay on a team this season? Absolutely.
Go with a questionable Maher or go with a questionable FA who also needs to get ramped up on fake calls and kickoff duty during a short week.
Never said you were illogical, it's perfectly fine to be worried about Maher, but the solution can't be worse than the problem. A free agent off the street that couldnt make a team isn't guaranteed to be any better than Maher in the kicking game. Now you have to figure out who is doing kickoffs for you. Who is doing your onside kicks, do they know the best spots to place it for your recovery team. Do you now eliminate your ability to run a fake FG.Say what you want - there is nothing RANDOM about Brett Maher. Dude missed 5 of his last 6 PAT attempts. But, in your world, I’M BEING ILLOGICAL?
Maybe you and Maher can find a TANDEM COUCH for therapy.
The only thing I can guarantee you - is that this new kicker WILL NOT miss five straight PATs. Hell, YOU could probably go two-for-five…. shankapotymus.Never said you were illogical, it's perfectly fine to be worried about Maher, but the solution can't be worse than the problem. Maher was bad....like really bad last week don't get me wrong. The guy also made 90% of FGs and 94% of XPs during the season. It's a concern but we can't overreact here either and make a change just for the sake of making a change.
And really lets look back at the Tampa game. Maher missed the kick that would have put them up 7-0....not like this was a high pressure kick and it's a given that the guy is a mental midget. Missed the first two wide, switched it up and pulled the next one too far. While I'm sure there is a confidence or overthinking aspect to it at this point, it's also very possible that the guy has a technical issue as well. Let your ST coach review the tape, go back through the basics in practice this week around your plant foot, head position, etc and maybe we can get an easy chip shot early in the game this week to get him back on track. I'd rather Fassel worry about fixing one guys one issue over fixing whatever issues the new guy brings with him in addition to taking time away from other pieces to get the new kicker ramped up.
But you're also assuming that Maher will never make a PAT again. I would bet a large sum of money that the guy doesnt miss multiple XPs again this week. The only thing I can guarantee you - is that this new kicker WILL NOT miss five straight PATs. While I'm not opposed to working out a kicker or two reality is it's already Wednesday. You gonna bring in kickers to workout and create a distraction for your coaches on a short week when they could be doing something constructive for the guys who you know will actually be playing?Cowboys should bring in some legs this week to work out. Then it really depends on how Maher is kicking in practice this week to determine what you do. The tough part is if it was the regular season you just consider it as a bad game and see how he responds in the coming weeks before making a change.
Knowing how critical these points may be ahead and how sensitive kickers can be its a concern. You want to give him the benefit of the doubt but can't afford to be wrong.
Oh, I would not cut Maher but there is no way he is my only kicker for Sunday. I give him one chance in that game and that's it if he misses. That cost us a roster spot but I am sure there is somebody with a nagging injury that we could put on IR.We just have to agree to disagree here. Lirim was awful in camp and the reason Maher is here in the first place, and Forbath hasn't played since 2020. I'll stick with the devil I know. I wouldnt be against bringing these guys in for a workout, just in case we see another poor performance out of Maher, but I can't make the switch just yet.
That's great in theory, but how many kickers actually live up to that standard? IDK the answer but I have to believe there are maybe 5 kickers in football who actually meet that criteria. Maher was 94% FG inside of 50 and 94% XP this year and is about to as close to the player you are describing as you can get.You need your kicker too …
- Make all XPs
- Make everything under 45
- Anything over 50 is gravy.
I will take the kicker who is 100% on XP and over 95% under 50 over inconsistent XPs but makes a 60 yard kick every once in a while

Maher is 90% FG percentage for the season. Bailey's last year was 68%.Maher is <50% last two games.
And he ended the game making one nearly straight down the middle. That doesn’t erase the memory of the previous misses, but it has to be somewhat of a confidence booster. But you're also assuming that Maher will never make a PAT again. I would bet a large sum of money that the guy doesnt miss multiple XPs again this week.
Just a week ago Dak Prescott went 14-37 for 128 yards. Did the Cowboys make a QB change despite putting up numbers worst than what any JAG QB off the street could put up? no, and he went out and had one of the best games of his career the next week. Give Maher a chance to redeem himself.
Dan Bailey hasn’t kicked since the 2020 season and he missed 7 FG attempts and 6 PATs. Some of you seem to think you’re going to get the same Dan Bailey that was Mr. automatic years ago. Lol No one moves on from their kicker after one bad game, especially four days before a divisional playoff game. Maher has been money all season. If he’s continuing to struggle in practice this week with PAT’s and is even struggling with chip shot FG’s then the Cowboys might have to make a change.Dan Bailey is currently listed as a Free Agent and available to sign. Maher was given numerous opportunities, why not Bailey? Aren't they basically the same age? Get Dan a ring
Yes. Should have brought in competetion 4 years ago.Should the Cowboys have brought in competition for Dak after the Washington game?
