We can start by considering other notable 5th round picks for Dallas:
1. Walt Garrison (RIP) - one of the more recognizable players in Cowboys history
2. Blaine Nye - 2 Pro Bowls and a key part to great Cowboy offensive lines in the late 60s to mid 70s.
3. Ron Springs (RIP) - stellar compliment to Dorsett in early to mid 80s.
4. Gary Hogeboom - nope. Sarcasm
5. Phil Pozderac - nope - constant holding calls. Sarcasm
6. Hershal Walker - Great running back who was sacrificed in 1989 to build a dynasty. The greatest 5th round pick here!
7. Orlando Scandrick - nice, steady complimentary player.
8. Joseph Randal - nope - underwear boy.
9. Simi Fehoko - nope
10. Damone Clark - playing his best considering spinal fusion surgery.

So to me, it goes: Hershal, Bland, Nye, then Garrison
Good stuff. I'll push him ahead of Nye when he signs his second contract with Dallas.

Great rookie year. Sophomore year tied for most Pick 6s in an NFL season. Leads NFL in INTs for 2022-2023 seasons. And still 7 games left! Unbelievable.

Was looking at the draft archives. Thought Jimmy might have drafted someone in the 5th that stood out this much, but no.

Have to go back to 1985 when the Cowboys picked Herschel Walker to find a similar steal, and that really wasn’t a typical draft pick. 1968 Blaine Nye, 1966 Walt Garrison

What a freaking find!
Almost not fair that Diggs is hurt. Best young corner duo in NFL if Diggs can play back to his pre-injury levels. Diggs, Bland and Gilmore. Wow. :flagwave:
How about Tony Romo and Everson Walls as undrafted free agents?

Yes! Off the top of my head I can't think of one in recent history! California boy too!
Fresno State Bulldog! Always around the ball, which means he’s a smart football player. Good hands. And will stick his nose in there and hit ya. A good tackler.

The complete package.

Scandrick was a very good player.

Way too early to anoint Bland.

Ron Springs was a high quality spell back.
Way too early? Way too early to tie an NFL record in game 10. He could easily set a new record in his 2nd season and 1st full season as a starter.

If we're just talking 5th round picks, Herschel Walker got us 3 super bowls. Bland is second.

Everson Walls had 11 interceptions in his rookie year 1981, 16 games, an even better feat, not to take anything away from Bland.

We have never seen a player with 4 pick 6’s in one season. Why we limiting him to round 5. He might be the best cb we have ever drafted period.
he we had a redraft, he might be a top 5 draft pick in the entire draft.

Not to take anything away from Everson but the rules have changed. Everson could basically assault a wr before the ball arrived which helped him and his pedestrian speed thrive.

Not sure who has the all-time Pick 6 record. Deion had *9* in his entire career: the most dangerous CB ever. Bland has 7 already.

What a steal Daron Bland is.
just think about the 31 teams that passed on him over and over during draft day. Scouts screwed the pooch when they evaluated him.

NFL QB's need to stop throwing it his way because when they do it's bad news!!!

Hershel was a futures pick for us. We just wanted his rights in case the USFL folded…… which it did and we got walker. But he was no 5th round project player. If he hadn’t signed with NJ, he was a top 3 pick in the draft.

That wasn't the question. The question was who was the better 5th round pick. I understand what you are saying, and the situation surrounding it, but the reality is he was a 5th round pick. And, as of this moment, it meant more to this franchise.

Everytime I read about the best late round picks, Roger Staubach goes down as arguably the greatest 10th round pick ever. They don't seem to care that it was because he was committed for 5 years to the Navy upon graduation.

Ronnie Lott for example, couldn't play in today's game with the rules we have. Same thing with Everson Walls. You could basically head hunt receivers back then without the ref even thinking about a flag. Thats why what Bland is doing is so dang elite. Rules are geared for the offense, yet the guy still gets it done.
