Darren McFadden’s Injury Woes Continue to Plague Him

Darren McFadden
misses practice due to strained hamstring” or “Darren McFadden to be out 2 to 4 weeks with knee sprain” are words Dallas Cowboys fans should get used to hearing as this is par for the course for the oft-injured running back from Oakland. Clearly the latter injury is not something that has happened yet. Still, here we are only a few weeks into the OTAs and McFadden is already having to sit out due to a hamstring issue.

It is early in the offseason training program and there is certainly no need to push any of the team’s stars at this point, but when you are trying to revitalize your career with one of the best offenses in the league, you need to make yourself available and take advantage of every opportunity that’s awarded to you while you can. Last year was the first time in his career that he was available for all 16 games and the numbers he put up were far from impressive.

Now both McFadden and the Cowboys will point out the fact that he played behind an awful offensive line and had a rookie quarterback throwing to average at best receivers, and they would both be right in their claims. But this is the NFL and you are expected to produce even when you are presented with less-than-ideal situations. Tom Brady still produced two years ago without a single weapon on offense. Even Tony Romo put up Pro-Bowl like numbers behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league in his first year as a starter.

When given the opportunity to play behind a somewhat decent line in 2010, McFadden did put up over 1,100 yards on the ground and averaged over five yards a carry. He also caught 47 passes for 500 yards that same year, but his season was cut short due to injury. He came back out the following season and was starting to put up similar numbers when yet another injury slowed him down.

This year he has the chance to play behind possibly the best offensive line in the league, along with Pro Bowlers Tony Romo, WR Dez Bryant and TE Jason Witten. So if he is able to stay healthy and fend off the up-and-coming Joseph Randle, he could once again put up big numbers and help this team get to the Super Bowl. But as the early returns are showing everyone in Dallas, it looks as though injuries may once again keep that from actually happening.

Darren McFadden has collected plenty of mileage on those muscles and bones since his "high water" mark of 1,100 yards way back in 2010. It's significant that even that productive season was marred by a season-ending injury. The following year another such injury hampered what would have been an otherwise highly successful year. Unfortunately, he was never quite the same since. Sometimes, the fickle finger of fate just keeps doing its thing. Let's hope that trend changes in 2015 but fragile hammies are well-known killers. Just ask Miles Austin.

Lol mini camp didn't even start yet and the hate is full on. How come when it always happened to Murray it was fine but w McFadden it's s different story already. Let's just wait this out. Damn.

Maybe because it's always the story with this guy? Maybe because every sentence that contains the words "Darren McFadden" also includes the word "injury"?

Any benefit of the doubt has long left town. There's great reason to doubt. 7 years of it in fact. At this point in his disappointing career, the onus is on McFadden to prove he's not a bust, not on fans to believe in something they haven't seen.

Rather than come in blazing and trying to stake his claim on the starting running back role, the only thing he's done is to reinforce his injury-prone label.

It's disappointing. If he can't make it through no contact OTA's, what are the chances he will when things actually get physical?

I will add ....maybe because the guy is a BUST...
maybe because the guy brings no confidence to the table
maybe because the guy has a permanent seat on the sidelines....

It's OTA's. It's work. It's getting familiar with your new team. It's learning a new playbook. It's working with a new line. It's competing for a starting job. It's stepping up.

It's a missed opportunity.

If these OTA's were as meaningless as some people claim, why have them at all?

They're only minimized when they show poorly on a player. If the reviews were positive, only then would they matter to some people.

I can see threads being started during a real game if he is on the sidelines.

Why isn't Darren in the game?

He looks like he is walking funny

Did you see how Garrett looked at him as he walked to the sidelines?

Especially when he's standing there in street clothes.

To me it's a non-issue. If he can't make it through the first couple weeks of camp, there's no doubt in my mind that he'll be a goner and replaced by another back.

For me it is not hate it is concern, Murray missed time true but he was also very productive when he played, McFadden has been in the league almost twice as long and has yet to make a season. I truly hope for the best but him dealing with a familiar problem he has dealt with many times is a concern.

What I don't understand is the hatred for Murray.

The last two years he posted 2966 yards from scrimmage.

You'd have to go back and count every yard he posted until half way through 2010 for McFadden to accomplish that.
