David Helman: On Wentz around VR

I was watching last weeks draft show and the topic of Wentz came up and they were talking about QBs. Helman gives his opinion about the QBs and it being he doesnt like any of the 3 at 4 for the Cowboys. Then goes into detail and say of the 3 the only one that has ever been talked about in VR is Wentz. Even before he was known, says you would hear coaches talking about him. Then says you can tell they like him because they run a similar offense in NDSU but Dallas isnt in love with him. But of the 3 if Dallas was gonna reach for a QB at 4, it would be for him not the other 2.

I don't think Helman qualifies as that, nor does anyone who writes for the official site.

I assure you the Cowboys have talked about all three QBs. Even if they hate a prospect, they've talked about him. At length. People who would buy this really have no clue of the draft process.

I don't remember anyone saying we wouldn't draft a RB. Just that we wouldn't reach for one if we had someone rated higher.



I wish we would've got David Johnson. I really wanted that guy in our backfield and he just looks like a budding superstar.

Trying to develop a suffocating defense is not emulating anyone. It's good sound football that produces Championships.

Thing is... We've done what the Broncos have done in a lot of ways but when we spend big money on guys like Brandon Carr they are spending their money on guys like Aqib Talib who are true difference makers.


This is why I don't have a problem with getting some of these bad character guys on the team.

Peyton Manning is still the face of this superbowl just like Romo would be if we won it.

So go get your Talibs and Hardys because Romo will be the face of it.

Of course. That is what will happen. And many of these folks will salute him for it. Then when we have nothing at QB they will cry like babies. Because then it's the here and now and they can see it. Then we'll look back at at least one of these QBs being franchise caliber but we shouldn't say anything because that's hindsight.

How intelligent is the room if you have to sell them on the importance of a QB in the NFL? You can have the greatest defense in history and you're battling an uphill climb without the QB.

How about the underlying issue of when teams like the Broncos sign big-money cornerbacks like Talib, it actually pays off?

And when we sign a guy like Carr, not only does he disappoint, but we've renegotiated a bad contract to make it even worse? To the point where we couldn't cut him when we wanted to?

Demarcus Ware leaves Dallas and is still a great contributor elsewhere, playing a key role in the Broncos' championship.

We sign a proven commodity like Greg Hardy, a top-of-the-league sack guy, and once we get him, he's a disappointment?

At some point, it's time to ask ourselves if the coaches we have are putting these players in the best position to make plays.

I didn't laugh. I didn't think we were drafting one either unless Gurley fell in our laps.

They probably haven't talked about Lynch and Goff because they are juniors and you didn't know if they were going to be worthy draft prospects at the time.

I think we would be making a big mistake to pass up on Lynch. I'll just put it at that.

I agree with you on Lynch, ive said this before if they are going to pick a Qb high id rather be it Lynch because he's played big talent and beat them. Goff has played big talent and looked avg. Wentz has played the sr bowl where most of the top talent in this draft didnt even play.

When I watched the show to me Helman was basically saying that Wentz was the only one HE heard them talking about in the hallways and this was before the senior bowl.

Some people just hear a little bit of something an automatically assume that either the scouts have not talked about other QBs at all...which was not the case. He just said he has only heard them talking wentz and he made the emphasis to say they were talking about him prior to the rise he has made in the drafnik world .

I am not sure that will be the case at all after the combine, though I think Wentz will show fine and have one of the higher Wonderlichs.
