Preseason always gives you an inacurrate view of the defense. They're either playing man to see who can cover, or they're playing zones, but with a mismatch of players who don't know each other well, or they're playing zone, but they're plugging in questionable guys who are unlikely to make the roster in some spots. It only takes one breakdown to get exposed.

Plus, they limit the DL stunts and games to keep things vanilla.

We looked bad defensively early last night, but that's pretty much par for the preseason course.

:hammer: It's not about looking at everyone with star glasses or not acknowledging that a prospect may be lacking in some area or slow to develop. It's the lack of analysis and reason that's mind blowing. There's also an alarming lack of perspective of how things aren't always what they seem this early in camp one way or another. We watched Chip Kelly's eagles teams shred teams in the preseason. Good Lord.

Where in my post did I stated I was amused about the overreactions??? I was stating some observations I had about the overreactions and how it might be beneficial to look at the context how the DLine affects the play of the DB's. Maybe you need to clearly read a post and understand the context of it.

OK, I'll play along, it's Friday.

You asked "Where in my post did I state that I was amused about overreactions"? - I present you Exhibit A, Second Sentence: "The over reactions about our DB and safeties getting burnt in the first half is a bit amusing."

I replied to your original post that I am amused that you are amused about overreactions when you overreacted in your post.

I present you exhibit B - "Our DLine just couldn't collapse their 2nd, third and 4th stringer offensive linemans at all, making Gabbert a journeyman look like the second coming of Rogers out there with lots of time to set his feet and find an open WR." Classic overreaction statement given the context that this was indeed the first pre-season game out of 5 with most if not all the starting DLinemen sipping gatorade on the sideline with their pinkies in the air.

Ok I'll give you exhibit A, but no overreaction whatsovever on Exhibit B, just stating said observations. Having said that glad to have someone who can actually respond with a well stated "argument" against my point. Depending on one's perspective my statements can be viewed as overreaction by someone else when I don't think it was :)

I didn't even watch the game last night. My opinion has nothing to do with the game last night. Our defense is not any good. It does not take a genius to figure that out. I don't get while get so defensive. Im not bashing them. I love the Cowboys. But after reading posts how this team is going to cruise thru the NFC it gets crazy after a while. This defense is NOWHERE near good enough to win a championship.
So basically what you are saying is that they are not any good on paper. The problem with paper is it cannot measure the collective mind of a team. And it certainly can't tell the future. To be clear, I expect the Cowboys defense to struggle early. There is alot of youth and we will be missing alot of players early. But it may benefit us in the long run. The youngest get much needed experience, which could help down the stretch and the missing many should be fresher down the stretch.

None of the LB who started Thursday run better than a 4.7. There was no underneath coverage as a result.

The S were being hung out to dry in the middle of the field.

Jones, Nzeocha, and Wacha can run and the coverage improved. Speed matters.

Did you forget last seasons record already? The defense this year will be better than last year. You are reaching for the panic button a little early.
I have to agree with you big dog. 2 weeks of camp and 1 preseason scrimmage is no where close good or bad how they will perform.

Remember 2014 when we lost I think all 4 preseason games or only won 1. Pats lost every preseason game but went 16-0. Detroit won every preseason game and went 0-16. Week 1 will show us where we stand some what

Our starting DBs will be doing much better than the backups by the time our regular season gets underway. It's virtually impossible to predict what the secondary is capable of at this point of the preseason with the backups taking over. The starters will be in there soon enough and the rookie youngsters should have a much better grasp of their responsibilities in due time. It's more than likely that the starting DL and LBs will be getting better pressure and coverage later in preseason as well. The staff gave the backups some valuable experience in preseason game one. It will surely serve them well in the future, especially with four more preseason games to go.

This game meant nothing. Both clubs fielded longshots and propects. We had a look at some young players and, to me, they played well. Its already been said...this club is on the cusp of big things. Expect a slow start and a strong finish. Watch out for Cowboys in 2018 and after.

perhaps the mods can create the "Over-react to a meaningless early pre-season game Zone"

It would be filled up at this point

my take on the game:

* L.Collins got work in at RT and looked good (I don't care who went up against him)
* Awuzie gained in-game experience (and I, for one, love that Dez provided "feedback")
* Some guys looked good enough to take another step (ex: I thought I saw some rumor that Morris could have trade interest); Smith (brother Smith) looked pretty good - gets him another week or two
* Dallas won the game; sure, meaningless game but the rookies felt a "win" vs "not a win"...more important, going to work I was able to remind the Eagles and Commanders fans of who was undefeated in the pre-season after week 1 :D

Lawrence is not a pass rushing demon. been here for a few years already. And he will have it tougher on the right side. Collins may be good for his position, but I wouldn't expect a tackle to have too many sacks. Both Smith and Tapper haven't played one down in the NFL in a real game so to expect these guys to save our pass rush is not realistic.

Agree 100%.......I hate to say this but the reality is outside of Collins, we have no ideal what to expect from any our DLmen. In fact,- I'll likely catch a little heat for this-if DeMarcus Ware was signed out retirement right now, he would our best DE IMO. At his age that's saying something. I'm not a doom and gloom poster but it's frustrating they HAVE NOT been able to fix this position since Ware left. Moore and Tapper give me hope but we'll see.......

I get the concerns about having to rebuild the defensive backfield. The over reactions about our DB and safeties getting burnt in the first half is a bit amusing. One has to really look at the main issue, no DB can hold a receiver for too long when we were not generating any type of pressure. Our DLine just couldn't collapse their 2nd, third and 4th stringer offensive linemans at all, making Gabbert a journeyman look like the second coming of Rogers out there with lots of time to set his feet and find an open WR. We really realistically won't see what our real D would look like until the second to the last pre-season game is played.

It doesn't matter who you draft or sign to play back there. If you combine Marinelli's scheme with no pass rush, you are going to have your DBs get beat and look bad.

This is a new thing by any measure. It happens every preseason. As sure as the sun rising in the east each morning.

What makes you think the Defense will better? We lost pretty much most of our DB. We drafted young guys who will prob need some time to develop. Why is shocking to people here that the consensus is our defense is our weak point.
