The Cowboys signed defensive end Igor Olshansky to replace Chris Canty on first and second down. One difference is Olshansky likely won't play much in nickel situations.

Stopping the run is a big priority for 3-4 defensive ends, and that'll be true Sunday against a potential three-pronged Tampa Bay attack featuring Cadillac Williams, Derrick Ward and Ernest Graham. Most of the quarterback pressure typically comes from the outside linebackers.

Canty did both well, even though his 10 sacks in four seasons didn't seem like much. Olshansky, who played for Phillips in San Diego, has 11 sacks in five NFL seasons. But Phillips said he thinks Olshansky, who plays on Ware's side of the field, can make a difference against the pass.

"Igor’s a very strong player that has controlled his area," Phillips said. "He can rush the passer actually pretty well and we can use him in that area, too. He’s just so strong and powerful that he can dominate the line of scrimmage at times and he can push the pocket where they can’t step up. That really helps DeMarcus Ware and people like that when a quarterback can’t step up in the pocket."

That said, Olshansky is another defensive newcomer to watch Sunday.
