Here are some examples of unlawful carrying of a weapon in Texas:

  • Carrying a weapon in a prohibited place, such as a school or government building.
  • Carrying a weapon while intoxicated.
  • Carrying a weapon with the intent to commit a crime.
  • Carrying a weapon that is not properly registered.
  • Carrying a weapon that is not properly concealed.
  • Carrying a weapon that is not in good working order.
There's no gun registration in TX

possession of marijuana, is a low-level state felony and the unlawful carrying of a weapon is a misdemeanor

This doesn't seem backwards to anyone?
Apparently, he only got the weapon misdemeanor because he had a controlled substance with it. If there were no drugs present, there wouldn’t be a misdemeanor charge.

Still seems backwards to me, but thanks for the clarification.
