I know Philly and Indy go tonight so at worst the Dallas "America's Team" Cowboys would be 13th in overall defense as for POINTS / GAME ..... which I believe is the number one judge of a defense, because after all you win or lose by the SCOREBOARD .....

Not sure about y'all ..... but I'll take it ..... That's better than I thought they would be and I hope they can stay in at least the top half in the league much less the top third where they are now ..... now I know it's just two games into the season but still I'm going to give the Defense some credit

11th in points / game (19.0)
13th overall in yards / game (316.5)
12th overall in passing yards / game (212.0)
16th overall in rushing yards / game (104.5)

and if you're interested in the offense:

18th in points / game (21.5)
8th in yards / game (375.0)
22nd in passing yards / game (201.5)
2nd in rushing yards / game (173.5)

Points allowed not bad when you consider offense gave up 14 directly. fumble return for a TD and int returned to the 2 yard line.

They count those against the defense, which in my opinion they shouldn't.

Take those 7 given up by the pick six off the board and our defense, the "worst evar omgz" is allowing a pretty decent 15.5ppg.

Also, with how the Saints looked against Cleveland (!) is anyone really sure this defense is going to get beat up on this year? I like what I've seen so far. Speed, tenacity, youth.

Its a bit early to be looking at rankings - for example Tony Romo is currently the 33rd ranked passer in the NFL.

Still, you point is valid -- after two games the defense is holding their own which is much more than most of us expected.

True that is why I say stats can be misleading. 2 of the 9ers score had to do more with offensive mistakes fumble returned for a TD and the int returned to the 2 yard line yet Defense gets tagged for it in the stats of points allowed

So far, so good.

I'll certainly admit I didn't think they would be anywhere close to this ranking, but I will qualify it and say it's early and we haven't yet faced an elite passer so I continue to temper my enthusiasm and expectations.

But it will be great if they can come anywhere close to maintaining a ranking like this.

I expect we will give up points when facing high powered offense, heck the NFL rules are set up for offense. Even the great seahawks forked over 30 point to SD yesterday. My hope is even in games like that, the defense will find ways to rise to the situation to make critical stops to give the team a chance.

I expect the defensive and offensive rankings to change their relative positions.

Dallas has about the same Yards/Play as last year, they've just faced fewer plays. Fewest in the NFL for all the teams that have played thus far. Thanks to the offense controlling to clock, no doubt.

Washington has the 3rd best scoring defense for teams with 2 games played, #1 yardage-wise.

It'll all change.

Very much agreed.

I'll settle for respectable.

I won't lie, it was nice to see those 3rd down stops yesterday!

I agree but as I posted on another thread part of winning the TOP battle is defense winning 3rd down situation. Tenn went 2 for 10 on 3rd down so Defense did a lot to get themselves off the field and the ball back into the hands of the offense

I agree. I don't expect the 85 Bears or last years Seahawks defense what I do expect is to see a lot of hungry young guys playing with a chip on their shoulders to show they are not a bad unit.

Indy and Philly still having to play can also mean we could be 9th in the league after this game.

Should be a shoot out.

Our offense is going to improve and barring injury I can only see the defense improving as they gel and we get Scandrick and some of our injured pass rushers back.
