So far, so good.

I'll certainly admit I didn't think they would be anywhere close to this ranking, but I will qualify it and say it's early and we haven't yet faced an elite passer so I continue to temper my enthusiasm and expectations.

But it will be great if they can come anywhere close to maintaining a ranking like this.

There very few elite passers in the nfl. And with the NFL rules average QBs look better then what they are. Find any excuse you want the point is the Niners did very little on a defense that was missing most of its front 4.

Anybody thats a fan should be impressed and excited that even with the injures they have and on suspension this defense is doing really good. People want to credit their success to not facing manning brees or brady. But dismiss the Cowboys have yet to field a entire starting unit on their defense this yr. And doing a very good job.

I agree. I don't expect the 85 Bears or last years Seahawks defense what I do expect is to see a lot of hungry young guys playing with a chip on their shoulders to show they are not a bad unit.

I think that this year's Seahawks defense will be worse than last year's Seahawk defense. That is the nature of the beast.

I think with some of the new rules it will be hard on a lot of defense. Ours included

My 'excuse' is that Kaepernick hasn't looked good this season thus far, in either game. After being given a huge cushion by the Dallas offense, he and the 49'ers coasted to victory with minimal effort. Last night, he effectively cost his team the chance for a win (sounds familiar)

I'd save the sermons until we get further along into this season and actually face some quality passers.

If we look this good against Brees, I'll be impressed.

Heck, I'll even settle for a good performance against Foles, Manning, or even Cousins with how low this current bar has been set!

Minimal effort? They tried, they just couldnt get into any rythem. Why? Because Dallas controlled the ball, that is until Romo gave it back. Maybe if the offense wouldve done something with the ball in all that time they had it and didnt gift wrap 14 points in the first 10 mins of the game they wouldve won? Because the defense did their job.

its amazing that the defense has done their jobs and gotten it done in the first two games while the offense has looked bad but fans want to focus on the part of the team thats on the upside. Go figure

In fairness others have set the low bar I think players expect more.

You keep holding onto that. I watched the game and I saw what the Dallas defense did and did not do. No blinders on me.

I've said numerous times, so far, so good.

But my fandom isn't making me blind to the issues and shortcomings that are still evident.

Make no mistake, I hope they play well and continue to improve, but after what I have seen recently, can you blaming me for being skeptical so far?

and make no mistakes I see areas as well we need to get better on. I do think as this group continues they will improve as a unit. I expect to have hiccups along the way you don't go from worst in franchise history to Doomsday defense but I think this group is young and hungry and I feel they have a DC who knows how to get the most out of them. This unit can't lean on a super star they have to work as a unit to get the job done.

10th in points / game (19.0)
12th overall in yards / game (316.5)
13th overall in passing yards / game (212.0)
14th overall in rushing yards / game (104.5)

and if you're interested in the offense:

18th in points / game (21.5)
7th in yards / game (375.0)
22nd in passing yards / game (201.5)
2nd in rushing yards / game (173.5)

*UPDATED*
A lot better than I expected for the defense ..... MUCH worse than I expected for the offense ..... do LOVE the rushing numbers

Thanks for the stats. Three very important stats missing from the list are 1) 3rd down conversions for both the offense and against the defense, 2) Turnovers, and 3) Penalties.

They count those against the defense, which in my opinion they shouldn't.

Take those 7 given up by the pick six off the board and our defense, the "worst evar omgz" is allowing a pretty decent 15.5ppg.

Also, with how the Saints looked against Cleveland (!) is anyone really sure this defense is going to get beat up on this year? I like what I've seen so far. Speed, tenacity, youth.

What are you doing here Demarcus :)
Nice picture.

People are going to say "its early" and "this means nothing" but I ask those same people, did at ANY point in this season you believe we'd be 11th overall in defense? I know I didn't. I expected us to come out the gate and have to score 30 to win every game. Well, ATLEAST 30.

If you had asked me after two games against those two offenses, I would not have been surprised at all. The Titans and the 49ers were ranked pretty low in overall offense last year. 49ers 24th in average yards per game. Titans 22nd in average yards per game.

With Locker leaving his willy in the locker room for the first half it's tuff to tell, give it 5 weeks, if we're still in the top 20, I'll be buying playoff tickets.

I think the general sentiment of this thread is spot on. So far, so good, but neither of these offenses are the benchmarks of the NFL. That said, I think a lot of us were expecting a dumpster fire from the first game on, so the defense has been a pleasant surprise so far. Still, too early to tell. Getting some fresh blood back in the coming weeks could serve as a boost, or everything could fall apart. Fingers crossed for a relatively healthy season.

But we were lost in defense which essentially means ANYONE can beat our D. And rankings say one thing but the Titans have a solid offense. Hunter, Wright and Washington? Its not what the Bears throw out there but that has to be a top 10 receiving core. Then they have those 4 running backs.....
