Defense

For Christmas I wanted a new, exciting, fresh coaching staff.

Santa screwed me.

You do not even need that. You need a staff that can recognize that no matter what past results have been that this is not a game that favors stagnancy.

Unless you have a very specific set of fortunate circumstances, you are not going to out-talent anyone in this league with any consistency.

Fractured history...like Bulwinkle the Moose. Defensive changes were brought in last season, and matured under Wade.

Fractured knowledge by you? The scheme they played under Del Rio is different than Wade's scheme.

"Nobody" thinks you win SBs with an elite defense?

I thought pretty much EVERYBODY knew that.

Amazingly, both sides had a great defense.
As bad as Manning was he played better football and his team won.
The Panthers will spend all off-season trying to UPGRADE THEIR OFFENSE.

good talk.

Manning didn't play better, turnovers and defensive touch downs won that game. Panthers been without their number 1 receiver all year.

Manning had 140 yards passing 0 TD 1 INT....

They were in position several times to make the catches but didn't. Brown and especially Ginn let them down.

Will have to wait to see what the numbers were, but I don't think they were sending five at Newton. They sent four most of the time, it is how it seemed to me. That was different from what Phillips did to Brady which was send only three quite a bit.

it was a 5 man blitz most of the night.
other times it was 4 and a spy.
what they knew going in was they could handle carolina's WRs with just 3.
they also knew carolina defers so denver planned to have the ball first and come out with exotic looks.
3 point lead, playing from ahead all game and not a single WR you have to worry about.

Sherlock Holmes for real...principals can be cross applied for areas of dominance. Carry on.

Denver won a SB this year because they didn't stick to their plan. They adjusted their plan and fired their HC who got them to the SB and got a new regime in. After getting their butt kicked by Seahawks in the SB, they realized they had to make changes.

Denver won a SB with their first year HC and had a #1 defense playing in Wade's system for one year. So much for continuity.

Becoming better at aomething youre already good at isnt "completely changing". Right before manning, that defense dragged tim ****** tebow to a playoff win.

Yes, Cam was worse. He completed only 43% of his passes and turned the ball over 3 times including having Von Miller just take the ball away from the strongest QB in the league and run into the end zone. Cam was awful. He was pressing by the first series.

Manning had zero zip to his throws but executed cleanly enough with only one TO.

They signed Peyton, Demarcus Ware, crazy Taqib Alib, Evan Mathis and many others.
They 100% sold out to go win a Super Bowl.
It was 1995 Jerry Jones.

I think that sell out was a 5 year plan.

"Completely changing" is completely changing.

The defense with Tebow that you're trying to refer to was in 2011 and was long gone by this season. Von Miller is about the only guy remaining.

Except their moves actually worked out.

Better than "worked out", they were grand slam home runs. It's truly amazing the 'Midas touch' Elway has had since he arrived.

Let's not forget the boldest move -- they fired their coach (John Fox) from last year who's record was:

2011: 8-8
2012: 13-3
2013: 13-3
2014: 12-4

Yes, they fired their coach who had 12.6 wins per season over the past 3 years.

Given that they won the Superbowl this season, an incredible amount of credit MUST go to the GM, John Elway.

honest question, if Romo would have been healthy all year, would the record still be 4-12?

I agree. This defense isn't too far from being elite. Need some other players but with free agency and draft, maybe even a trade we should secure some good defensive talent

Denver was able to build an elite defense almost overnight by attacking the draft AND free agency for playmaking pressure players and finally bringing in Wade Phillips last season. Those that make excuses about why they can't do something should be smacked upside their head and removed from the coaching staff, the organization and the fanbase.

No more excuses, no more we can't. No more asking "why", we need to start asking "why not".

Could not agree more. Elway would not settle for very good, he craved greatness. And he went out and got it. Consistency be da@@ed.

You have to get someone who knows defense. Bum Rob Rob, a 300 year old Monte Kiffin and then his disciple running a 300 year old scheme won't yield good results.

I agree that defense is critical I also know a QB is critical, Dallas could wait until Romo retires and we go through the whole process once again or you look to the future now and address that future with a top ranked QB. I hope Dallas is very active both in the draft and FA in terms of getting more help on the defensive side of the ball but I also happen to think this is the chance to look beyond today and address the future of this team

That's the real key. The draft is not just about next season. I remember people complaining about using the tag on spencer, but the reason we had to was because it wasn't addressed sooner. Ideally you have a guy waiting in the wings behind every guy. Doesn't work that way all the time but when you are talking about QB you had better have one because the chances of getting a good one on any given year is slim
Ask the Browns who thought they had addressed the need many times. And I know they are the Browns but they are just one example of many around the league

Wade Phillips scheme is even older than Marinelli's. Any scheme can be adjusted and improved, but it takes the right players AND the right coaches to make it successful.
